Wedding Venue Checklist: What to Ask a Potential Venue

The gardens are gorgeous. The skylights are stunning. The views? Magnificent. It’s the perfect venue… or is it? It’s easy to get caught up in the aesthetics of a location, but beware of unwelcome surprises. Avoid any potential snags in your wedding plans by asking a few crucial questions before you write that deposit check:

How many people really fit?

When looking at a potential venue, you will probably be given an estimate on how many people the space will hold. It’s important to ask if that head count takes into consideration room for a band or DJ, cake and gift table or dance floor. Sure, they may say that you can easily fit 10 tables of 10, but don’t forget to ask if there will be room for anything else.

What’s the policy for outside vendors?

Many venues have contracts with certain caterers, photographers and entertainment companies. If it’s important to you to be able to choose your own, then you might have to keep shopping for a location. If you are going to use the in house team, make sure you ask about vendor meals. Some photographers’ and bands’ contracts require that you provide them with dinner, which can throw your budget off if you’re not careful.

Are there décor restrictions?

Many venues keep “house” supplies on hand, which are included in the price of the location. And while taking advantage of these freebies can help keep costs down, you should keep in mind that these linens and china are usually more about utility than luxury. Also, if you’re dreaming of a reception aglow with the light of 300 flickering candles, make sure you ask before you sign that contract. (Some locations have policies against certain candles and flowers) Finally, don’t forget to ask about whether or not you can use nails or staples on the wall, and if there is a policy about taking down any fixtures that they already have up.

Finding the perfect venue for your boda is one of the most important steps you can take towards ensuring that your big day goes exactly the way you’ve always dreamed. Armed with a few strategic questions, you can tackle those walk-throughs with confidence.

Love love LOVE these dresses. I'm a big fan of the bohemian look for any sort of wedding, but I think it's especially appropriate for an outdoor beach wedding (I blog about destination weddings to Mexico.) I posted a few of these pictures and link to this post on my own blog, please check it out at www.WedInMexico.org. I'm also on Twitter @WedInMexico. Thanks!
