Wedding Traditions of Venezuela

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

By Veronika Lazabal

Planning a traditional Venezuelan wedding? You might want to start by formally asking the bride’s parents for her hand! This tradition, while no longer quite as popular in the states, remains big in family-oriented Venezuela.

Venezuelan bodas actually consist of two weddings and two receptions—a small civil ceremony and party, followed about two weeks later by the religious services and big fiesta. And with native Indian, Spanish, African, Italian and neighboring South American influences, you know that the food at all those parties is bound to be an out of this world eclectic mix of flavors.

Just don’t be surprised if the newlyweds pull a disappearing act midway through the reception. It’s considered good luck for the bride and groom to slip away unnoticed some time during the festivities. Feel free to party on into the night as the happy couple sneaks off to get started on their honeymoon!
