Real Engagement: Ivette & Andres in Chino Hills, CA

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

I absolutely adore this bride-to-be Ivette. She is such a sweetheart. You are going to love some of the moments and feelings she shared with us.

How did you two meet?

I was already in a serious relationship of 8 years, and had been very unhappy. Andres, my fiancé and I were working at Sam’s Club in chino hills and I had heard from everybody that he had the biggest crush on me. I of course ignored it because I had somebody and wasn’t interested at the time. Oh I didn’t know who he even was.

One day, my manager ask me to assist him, and as I walked towards him I couldn’t help, but notice how red he got. I had to spot for him while he drove forklift. He got so nervous that he couldn’t drive lol. I started to notice him, he would tell me everyday how beautiful I was and how lucky my boyfriend was. I know all guys tell this to girls. Then they want to get with them, but I actually believed him. Everyday he would find a way to see me.

I started to notice him. I broke it off with my boyfriend at the time and it started becoming more obvious that I had real feelings for him. 5 years ago on valentines day was our first date, and we have been together since then. He says he loved me from the first time he saw me. I fell hard for him the first time we held hands.

yvette-3
Images by Ana Paul

How did he propose?

Well, he had planned to propose 2 months before we found out we were pregnant. He convince my family to drive me back to Southern CA without him because I never travel without him (we live near San Francisco). He told me he couldn’t get time off work, so the whole time I thought he really couldn’t come.

Every time he would call me he would drive to a tire shop (since that’s were he works, Costco) and pretended he was working, but the whole time he had drove the day after n planned the proposal. Je had asked my parents to meet him at a local donut shop and ask them permission for hand. He knows how important they are to me.

How did you pick the date?

September is the closest to both our birthdays and we wanted to always remember it even more special.

What are your colors?

Purple and lime green.

Real Wedding: Alejandra & Ben in Austin Tx

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

A special thank you to Suzi Q of Suzi Q Weddings! We absolutely love this fab photog from the most beautiful awesome city of Austin TX.

According to Suzi, their wedding was DIY with lots of family helpers. But Suzi didn’t know that until afterward and when she found out she was so in awe! Their wedding was very stylish and put together. It didn’t feel DIY at all! Ladies…wouldn’t you agree?

One nice touch: Ale and Ben had a preceremony cocktail hour. Plus they had one after the ceremony too!

An incredibly big thank you to Suzi Q of Q weddings. She is a brilliantly talented photog from my favorite city…Austin, Texas. Yes I do love it there.

This couple was incredible because the wedding looked incredibly chic and oh by the way – it was all DIY!  Yes, the bride and the groom and their families did most of the work on the decor, tables and goodie bags.  Talk about family love!

Invitation 101: Top Printing Options for Your Wedding

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Guest post by Melinda Morris, Lion in the Sun

We are absolutely thrilled to have Melinda Morris from Lion in the Sun guest posting for us….

Though wedding invitations are only one part of the wedding process, there are so many decisions surrounding your invites  – style, theme, font, color, paper weight and printing options, to name a few. It can feel well a little overwhelming.

Today, Melinda Morris of Lion in the Sun walks us through the different printing methods and which is best for your needs. Here are her amazing suggestions for printing options for your wedding:

Flat printing:

Flat printing is well, flat. It can also be called offset or digital. Digital printing is much like a laser printer and is a great affordable option and works well with multicolor designs.

Thermography produces raised printing similar in appearance to engraving. The ink has a glossy sheen and the edges may be inconsistent. Thermography is not suitable for printing on dark colored paper and we do not recommend it for larger graphics as it can give the appearance similar to that of an orange peel.

Price tag: Flat and thermography are usually the same price category and are the least expensive printing processes.

Letterpress:

Letterpress is the oldest form of printing. Ink is applied to the raised portions of a metal or hard plastic printing plate, which is then pressed into the paper. It’s debossed or pillow like effect is great for one or two color text or simpleline images. It is usually printed on cotton or textured paper and gives a more handmade or artisanal feel.

Price tag: Letterpress is the second most expensive printing process and can exceed the cost of engraving in some cases.

lion-in-sun-letterpress

Engraving:

Engraving is when a metal die with an impression cut into the surface is filled with an opaque engraving ink then pressed against the paper creating raised areas of the paper coated with ink. Engraving creates the raised surface on the front of the paper. The ink has a matte finish and the edges are crisp allowing for a lot of fine detail. Several companies that we carry will only engrave on colored papers since thermography can be inconsistent in color. Engraving is the most expensive printing process, often almost double the cost of flat or thermography printing.

engraving

Real Wedding: Valentina and Francisco in Chile

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

A special thank you to Gardner Hamilton for this lovely couple from Chile.

Valentina and Francisco, a decorated naval officer had a wonderful ceremony at one of the smaller private churches in a prestigeous part of Vina del mar where over 300 guests spilled out to the streets.

Wedding Photography by Gardner Hamilton for www.weddingphotochil

Preparation

Before was 2 hours of preperation and at home photography with the bride and family at the family home which had some great little balconies off the high and hot sun.
As is typical in Chile weddings are very formal with everything running to a tight format then when the party hits, the ties come off and so often do the shoes as the dancing takes us all into the early morning

With Chile having such a huge coastline the naval presence is very strong and the traditions run deep, never more so than at weddings. thr bridge of swords is a regular event for me to photograph.
The wedding traditions at this “ënd of the world” location have some diversities and changes in chronology esspecially due to the intense summer heat and strong sunlight causing many of the weddings to start at 7pm and continue through to 5 and 6am.

5 Reasons to Keep Your Wedding Small

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

By: Veronika Lazabal

Intimate receptions are the hottest trend in weddings today. Keeping the guest list small means you can create an unforgettable fete, completely customized to you and your fiancé. Still not convinced? Here’s a look at the top five reasons to have an intimate wedding reception:

1. You have tons of venue options if you keep it small

Because you don’t need an enormous space for an intimate wedding reception, you can choose from lots of places that would otherwise be off limits. Forget played out hotels and halls; think art galleries, museums, swank restaurants, or private yachts.

2. You can splurge where you want.

Small doesn’t have to mean rustic! An intimate reception means you can make it extra lavish and extravagant—for less coin. Up the wow factor by treating your guests to a delectable sit down dinner, or indulge on a designer dress for yourself.

3. You get to spend extra time with your guests.

We’ve all been to bodas where you feel like just another face in the crowd. The beauty of planning a really intimate wedding reception is that your guest list includes only those friends and family that you genuinely want to share your day with. And without a big group to entertain, you can spend as much time as you like with everyone there.

4. You’ll enjoy your wedding more.

How many brides actually get to relax and enjoy their big day? Without stressing over every little detail, you can be one of the lucky few. Intimate wedding receptions are just plain easier on the bride.

5. Your boda will be memorable.

Maybe the coolest part about an intimate reception is the fact that it’s going to stand out in everyone’s mind. Whether because of a unique venue, personal touches, or the closeness of all the guests—yours will be one wedding that no one will ever forget.

Bridesmaids Shower Inspiration: Casual California Chic

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

By: Candice Lapin

Hola Novias….

I wanted to share this incredible dinner fresh from Sarah Yates. If you are not familiar with Sarah Yates, you should be she is an incredible photographer from Ventura/Santa Barbara area that shoots a ton of weddings and e-sessions in the Los Angeles, OC and Ventura/SB area.

She is so talented that she put together this dinner party and I thought – omg! It is time to share. I absolutely love backyard gatherings that are simple and chic and can be done for a great price.

If you know me, you know that I love high style and high fashion but I think style can be achieved on any budget which is why I love Target and Ikea so much.  Whether you have a ton to spend on your wedding or just a little bit for a backyard party, you absolutely can have a chic event…it is just about the details.

Let’s dissect all the best parts of this dinner that Sarah threw for a few friends….

Picnic Table Style

You don’t have to go crazy on table tops or have a farm house table to make a wedding or shower look incredible.  It is often the little details like the mis-matched chairs that bring a lot of charm to a dinner or lunch.

bridesmaids-table-top-idea-1
Images by Sarah Yates

The Chairs

Check out her mismatched chairs.  You might think – oh no – mismatched but let’s face it. It looks much more interesting this way.  Some of the chairs are even a little weathered.
bridesmaids-table-top-idea-2
Images by Sarah Yates

The TableTop

What I love about Sarah’s table top is that each item is vintage or flea market style.  It doesn’t match but it goes beautifully together.

Mason Jars

Mason jars are an incredible way to bring a lot of that simple farmhouse DIY Martha look to a table.  There are so affordable too.  You can either begin collecting them from Flea markets or even Michaels.

Long Instead of Round Tables

You may have read some of my other posts and articles about how much I LOVE long tables but it is true.
bridesmaids-table-top-idea-3
Images by Sarah Yates

WildFlowers

We are huge fans of wildflowers.  We love that Sarah did small arrangements. SHe mixed foxtail and rununculas.  How fabulous!
bridesmaids-table-top-idea-4
Images by Sarah Yates

Small Candle Votives

Small candles in chic clear votives are an incredible way to bring a look together!!  Plus, as nighttime hits, everyone looks so beautiful in candle light.
bridesmaids-table-top-idea-5
Images by Sarah Yates

Individualized Nametags

It is an adorable way to put placecards at each seat!
bridesmaids-table-top-idea-6
Images by Sarah Yates

Mismatched Napkins

Instead of white napkins, do turqoise and purple – these are the hottest colors in weddings and showers this summer.

White Plates

Don’t even bother with colorful plates – go all white even if they are paper!

Succulents in vases

Ok so along with the incredible wildflowers at Sarah’s party were these adorable succulents in vases.  Incredible!

I posted a few of these pictures and link to this post on my own blog, please check it out at www.WedInMexico.org. I'm also on Twitter @WedInMexico. Thanks!
