By Deanna Gabelein

We all want that flawless look for our wedding that all the movie stars have: perfectly creamy skin with absolutely flawless shades of color.  Choosing the right makeup colors is a very important part of developing your makeup look for your wedding day. The right colors will make you look absolutely radiant. A true vision of loveliness!

Here is a great and simple guide to Selecting Makeup Colors for Your Skintone:

OLIVE SKIN

For those of you ladies with olive skin, it all starts with enhancing that olive tone with beautiful colors that compliment not detract:
Eye Shadow: Vanilla, taupe, light gold, bronze, eggplant, espresso
Eye Liner: Espresso, ebony
Blush: Warm pink or peach, bronze
Lipstick/gloss: Shimmery nudes, soft pink or peach, bronze/golds

DARK SKIN

For those of us with a darker shade of brown, these tones will definitely have you feeling like a total glamazon!
Eye Shadow: Copper, eggplant, espresso, ebony
Eye Liner: Ebony
Blush: Berry colors like raspberry, fuchsia, bronze, deep red
Lipstick/gloss: Caramel, deep red, mahogany, plums – especially in sheer glosses

Top 5 Things to Consider When Searching for the Perfect Reception Site

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

By Shelly Seong

If you’re oblivious to the initial stages of searching for a potential reception site for your wedding, take a deep breath and start slowly by compiling a list of the most important factors. Instead of conjuring up an endless series of components, we decided to make your life easier by focusing on the top five questions to ask yourself when hunting for the right ceremony and reception venue.

Does it fit your budget?

With today’s economy, it’s important to find a venue to your liking without spending a fortune. The smart bride-to-be should figure out whether or not she wants to have the ceremony and reception at the same place. Just because a particular venue is beautiful, do not impulsively say yes without fully considering the rest of your budget for the wedding.

Is the venue big enough to fit all your guests?

Size does matter. You may have found that perfect little garden setting to exchange your “I do’s,” but will it fit three hundred of your guests? You don’t want them to stand around in the back do you? Furthermore, if you plan to have your reception at a different site, it is important that the two places have similar coordination and formalities. Also, be sensible and practical when considering the venue occupancy.

Is there an on-site coordinator to help you through the day?

Having an on-site coordinator can be very beneficial and cheaper than hiring a separate private planner. On-site coordinators can help with catering food, but be sure to taste the food before you make any kind of decisions. You want your guests to be able to enjoy their meals just as they enjoy their time at your wedding, right?

Are there any particular food preferences for your guests?

Guests can be extremely picky with food. You might want to consider serving appropriate meals to the meat lovers and vegetarians. In addition, guests with certain food allergies can allow a very difficult and stressful process of planning out a relevant menu, but it is something very important to consider.

Is it a la cart or all inclusive? Personally, inclusive offers are better!

All inclusive can be really amazing because the food and drinks are budgeted together. Talk to your venue to see what kind of offers they have with alcohol and what the bar budget is.

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Getting to the cake cutting can be quite a feat.  There are so many choices to consider, from flavors to colors to shape.  So, here are a few of our favorite new trends to help give you a little inspiration on the road to dessert.

Love Birds

Ok, so love birds are probably the ultimate cake topper right? We think so.  From doves in sugar to doves in chocolate, we love this trend. Its perfect for a day or evening wedding, whether swanky or casual.

Flowers Galore

There is no reason not to splurge on sugar flowers.  Typically they go best on fondant because it provides a smooth surface.

Other Elements

Whether mushrooms or whatever the theme, try incorporating elements like these mushrooms for a different take on fabulous.

Remember, if you want fresh floral elements you can always ask your florist to add some of the flowers from the decor to amp up the volume on your cakes and desserts.

Bridal Testimonials:

“Wow-Grand Tradition was absolutely spectacular. I knew from the moment I opened the website that I would be married there. They take care of everything and make it extremely easy to remember all the details because they send you reminders and updates. Our wedding was SPECTACULAR, and all of our guests were so impressed with everything. They kept asking us how in the world we found this “hidden gem” and I am so glad we did! They were professional, organized and provided us with exceptional service. All of our guests also could not stop talking about the food, saying it was “the best wedding food they ever had.” We were able to sit and eat and it was absolutely delicious! (not usually easy when feeding large groups of people). You can’t go wrong for the price either-no cake cutting fees, no hidden costs, no surprises. They are on top of everything and made our wedding absolutely unforgettable.”

“Our wedding was just three weeks ago. I could not have dreamed of a wedding that was so romantic, flawless, and well received by our guests. Numerous guests pulled me aside to share with me that this was the best wedding, out of all they had been to in their lifetimes including their own, that they had attended. The Grand Tradition staff including Desiree, Jenna, and Justin made our wedding an outstanding experience. They make it so easy. The venue is perfect! The food was acclaimed as the best served at any wedding!!! The Beverly Mansion at Grand Tradition felt like our home that we could share with our guests. What a gift!”

“My husband and I just got married in July at the Grand Tradition Estate, and we couldn’t have asked for a more amazing day! All of our guests were in awe at how beautiful and well put together the ceremony and reception was, and to be honest it really was the most beautiful wedding I had ever been to! The staff is wonderful, the food was amazing, and the whole day really just flowed better then I could have ever imagined!”

“I got married at Grand Tradition Mansion back on June 9th 2007. I looked at so many venues and when I came across this secret beautiful place in Fallbrook I feel in love. The drive on the parkway up to the Mansion is breathtaking. As I walked around the mansion to view the grounds I new right then and there I had to get married there. The mansion’s ballroom is spectacular. I still have people coming up to me over a year later still talking about it. This is such a unique find. I wanted a place that was secluded and I got just that. I looked at Golf courses and the beach, but with those types of places you have strangers looking on as you get married. I wanted my Wedding to be private for family and friends. The Grand Tradition Coordinators are wonderful and I couldn’t of done it without them. I had the pleasure of working with Gena, both she and the McDougal family offered so much help in making my day special and memorable. I would recommend this place to any bride and groom. This is a picture perfect venue.
Thanks again Grand Tradition for making my Wedding one to remember for years to come. “

Wedding Color Inspiration Board: Sherbert, Aqua & Yellow

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

We absolutely love it when we are blog hopping and catch a colorful wedding like this. There were so many cool elements to choose from. So let’s check it out already!

The Color Palette

This bride chose an amazing color palette: sherbert, aqua and yellow.  We love lots and lots of color inspiration boards but I always love unique weddings where the bride and groom go just a little more ALL OUT on the details.  They were able to use paper, decor and even their attire to weave in gorgeous sherberts, aquas, yellows and more.

A lot of stuff was done DIY so ladies if you are looking for ways to take the wedding up a notch it doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune at all!

The Invitation

Check out this rad indie invite.  We always love birds but we especially adore love birds with a rock-n-roll attitude.

The Ceremony

Another thing we noticed is that if you have awesome layers of color, you have such an opportunity to  use it in the ceremony programs, fans, parasols, water bottles, cups.

la-east-wedding-ceremony

The Attire

The Bridesmaids were able to wear any dress of their choosing but it had to go with the colors of the wedding – we love that!  I love this whole trend of letting your maids wear what they want – it means they can splurge on a great dress that they will wear over again because it is in a color that matches their skin tone and a dress shape that matches their body type as well as overall style and attitude.

Message in a bottle

It’s becoming an increasing popular option for the bride and groom to make a charitable donation on behalf of their wedding guests rather than opting for a throw away favor.

So here we have a really cute idea to let your guests know in style that you have chosen to support a charity. This idea is particularly good for beach or waterside wedding, and best of all is so simple.

What you will need:

1. Bottles
2. Sand and small shells
3. Paper
4. String

Where to find your Products

You can pick up little bottles from dollar discount stores or for an environmentally friendly option, start collecting old sauce bottles and clean the labels off.

The process is really easy – all we’re going to do is print out a little note to our guests to say we are donating to our chosen charity on their behalf.

Roll it up and tie up with a little string, then place it in your bottle with a some sand and a few small shells for decoration.

Couldn’t be easier! If you want to give your guests a little more then replace the sand and shells with some appropriately colored jellybeans or small mints.

We even have this lovely donation card for you to download and print if you would like to support those affected by the oil spill on the Gulf Coast. What a great way to give your guests something with real heart and meaning on your special day.

Sweet Idea: Mini Wedding Cakes

Monday, July 12th, 2010

We were scoping Elizabeth Messina’s incredible blog when we eye’d this incredible photo of a smallish wedding cake.

It absolutely inspired us to write or at least remember to write a little something on one of our favorite topics: dessert.  We often feature incredible candy tables and beautiful table tops but we love the idea of going traditional and incorporating a beautiful miniature wedding cake that the bride and groom can actually take a bite out of.Yes, that’s right ladies, a mini-wedding cake.

mini-cake-idea-1

Make It Mini

One way to make it a little more offbeat though and make it more special is to make it mini.

Reduce the Layers!

Ok so it may seem counter intuitive on your biggest day ever to go understated but something its the little things that make a HUGE impact. So yes, that means no twelve tiered cake. Instead think like 2 layers!

mini-cake-idea-2

Go Pastel

For added touches of interest, think understated or muted colors on the cake like mint or yellow. We love that color combination. It is amazing!

DIY Beauty Tips to Create a Smoky Eye

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

By: Deanna G

Are you looking to create a smoky eye look for your wedding day?  We love the dramatic effect it can create for eyes.  But, sometimes it can difficult to figure out how to achieve the right smoky eye wedding look in just the right way.

Tip 1:

If you are fair, to start, use a medium brown for contouring; if you’re olive-skinned or darker, use dark brown.

Step 1:

To begin, prime your entire lid and crease area, all the way up to the brow bone, with an eye shadow primer, foundation (if it’s oil and sunscreen-free), or a small amount of concealer. Make sure you also cover the darker, recessed area at the bridge of your nose. This will keep your eyes looking bright and your eye makeup in place throughout the day.

Step 2:

Next, dust a light, flesh-colored eye shadow over the same area you applied the primer. This is your “base” color. Matte colors, like bone and vanilla, work well on almost everyone.

Step 3:

Place your darker contour color on the outer 1/3 of eye lid and in the outer ½ of your crease. Don’t blend yet, just blot on color. Also, use an eye liner brush to line the bottom lash line with this same color – all the way to the inner eye. Use a Q-Tip to soften the line.

Step 4:

Now, dip your blending brush (I use different ones for the base and blending) in the base color and use it to blend the edges of your contour color, using a circular motion. This is the secret to seamless blending. Add another layer of the contour color to the crease, using the same technique, if you think you need it.

Step 5:

Use a black eyeliner pencil or gel to line the outer ½ of your top lash line then smudge the line with your finger or a Q-Tip. Apply a thin layer of dark brown or black eye shadow over the line to soften the look and “set” the eye liner.

Step 6:

Curl lashes and apply false eye lashes. I use Ardell #110 which are very natural-looking. Usually, I cut them in half and place them on the outer corners of the upper lids. Again, it looks very natural and… you get 2 pairs of lashes for the price of one. (It’s AMAZING how much lashes add definition to the eyes! Absolutely gorgeous in photos, I promise.)

Step 7:

Apply 2 coats of black, waterproof mascara to the upper and lower lashes. Use an eyelash comb to separate after coats.

Step 8:

Now, using a makeup sponge, apply foundation under eyes and all the way up the sides of the eyes, towards the brow. You’re using the sponge to adjust the “liner” under eye to the desired depth and to “clean up” any shadow too far outside the eye area.

Wedding Color Inspiration Board #43: Cherry, Aqua, and Cream

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

We love bright aqua and cherry for a wedding color inspiration board. It is absolutely festive and perfect for a April, May or mid-Summer wedding.

Wedding Color Palette

This bride and groom definitely went all out on the details. From the cherry accents all throughout the flowers to the lovely touches of blue on the tables, these colors really pop but are used in a chic way for sure.

3. Candy Filled Cookie Jars

I love cookie jars. They can be picked up relatively cheap at Target or even a Michaels. Then you can start shopping the dollar stores for bright candies like jelly beans to bring your wedding day colors into the reception.

Provide little baggies to let guests take away their own little favors.

Real Wedding: Ada & Luis in Los Angeles, CA

Monday, July 5th, 2010

A special thank you to Ana Paul Photography. We absolutely loved Ada and Luis’s wedding.  They are an adorable couple – don’t you agree?

Paratinovia: How did you both meet?

We met 4 years ago through family.  He is my uncle’s wife’s cousin. She insisted that I meet him because somehow she thought that we would be a good match. However, I was engaged at the time and we started a very casual friendship.

Paratinovia: How long did you date before getting engaged?

I attended a family function, where I announced that I was newly single. One thing led to another and it took only 3 months of dating before he proposed.

Paratinovia: How did he propose?

He asked me to meet him at the park where we kissed for the first time. I didn’t think anything of it. I assumed we were just meeting there to go somewhere after that.  Then, we sat in the same bench and he got on one knee and tol me that…since the first time he met me, he knew I was the one for him, and he wanted to spend of the rest of his life with me…and then he popped the question.

Paratinovia: What were the main colors and theme of your wedding?

Spring green and deep purple.

Paratinovia: Is there any significance to your colors?

My favorite color is spring green, but it is also the color of spring, when things are born and rejuvenated.  The purple was just a nice accent color.

Paratinovia: How did you choose your wedding venue?

I had to make sure it offered the kind of food that everyone would like.  We also wanted it to be more casual and related, especially since we are having a big wedding in Mexico next year (getting married by the church).

Paratinovia: Did you incorporate anything unique into your wedding?

Unique…the photography was very different but other than that we went very traditional. Mariachi’s and all!

Paratinovia: How did you incorporate your Mexican background into the reception and the wedding?

I had Mexican seafood (colcajete, fajitas, mar y tierra).  I had Mariachi’s and…the whole ceremony was in Spanish!

Paratinovia: How did you pick your team?

That was simple, my best friend.

Paratinovia: What part did your coordinator play in helping you make those decisions?

Hmmm.  I coordinated myself.

Paratinovia: Was budget a factor? If so, in what way?

Very much so, because we are having the “big wedding” in Mexico next year, we wanted to keep this wedding very casual  Even then, the actual cost was twices my budget.

Paratinovia: What would you do differently?

Nothing, I loved it!

Wedding Color Inspiration # 43: Cream, Butter & Lime

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Hi chicas,

The amazing Pamela from L’Auberge del Mar sent us this amazing and beautiful wedding from the gorgeous hotel of the same name in Del mar.  I had the pleasure of staying at this fabulous venue.  It was incredible.

Color Palette: Cream, Butter & Lime

What we loved about this color palette of cream, butter, and lime is that it works equally well in late Summer or even early Fall.  I like that Lime and Chartreuse can be interchangeable ladies so this was maybe a little more chartreuse but how could we resist.

Floral Arrangements

Ok so another thing we really liked about this wedding was the florals they used: roses, orchids and hydrangea.  Check it out.  We love hydrangea but you will need to remember that during late Summer they can wilt so be careful about your heat factor.  That being said, roses and orchids are more hearty and will last longer!

Cake Decor
Ok remember our amazingly simple backyard ideas article?  This cake is literally the embodiment of the perfect mix of elegance and simplicity.  Not too much craziness ladies on the cake.  Remember, less is definitely more!

Love love LOVE these dresses. I'm a big fan of the bohemian look for any sort of wedding, but I think it's especially appropriate for an outdoor beach wedding (I blog about destination weddings to Mexico.) I posted a few of these pictures and link to this post on my own blog, please check it out at www.WedInMexico.org. I'm also on Twitter @WedInMexico. Thanks!
