Real Wedding: Celina & Raphi in Los Angeles, CA

We love weddings but this one especially grabbed us. From the adorable coral and blue color palette to the sweet bride and groom.

Color Palette

We absolutely dig this color palette of coral red and robin’s egg blue so much that when we saw this wedding we knew we had to show big photos and stat!

Coral and blue is always in style and a great way to introduce strong color into any wedding that is absolutely luscious.

Honeymoon Feature: Junia & Andres in Banff

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Hi Chicas,

We absolutely fell in love with Junia and Andres’ wedding a few weeks back and well we asked them to send us their honeymoon too! How cute right?

Here are a few snaps so you can see how these two adorable lovebirds kept the sentiment going well after the party stopped.

Here is her impression:

Our first instinct was to go somewhere tropical. We know it would have been relaxing, sitting on the beach, watching the sunset, etc. But we wanted to have a little bit of an adventure and do something untraditional, in a climate that we hadn’t experienced before. I had the idea of going to Alaska but that was too expensive, so we researched and found Banff.

It’s a small town in Alberta, Canada right along the Rockies and an awesome skiing/snowboarding town. I’d never been skiing before, and never really experienced a climate below 50 degrees so it was all new to me. It was beautiful! Definitely recommend doing your research online.

You can find the best deals on Expedia, Hotwire, and Orbitz. We pretty much used all those sites to find the best deals and book everything from our rental car to our hotel. The views were amazing, the people so friendly and the trip so so worth it!

5 Simple Backyard Wedding Ideas

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Looking for simple ways to turn your backyard wedding from drab to fab? We know! Sometimes when a bride hears backyard they think, oh no break out the pinatas – not at my wedding. But, before you start thinking its turning into my 13th birthday party or even your best friend’s graduation party, think again.

These amazing touches will help cement your title as the wedding of the year and the go-to wedding planning diva without breaking the bank.

Simple White on White Cake

It may seem like an obvious concept but one of the easiest ways to turn your wedding into a breathtaking fete is to go really really simple on the details.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you can add a lot of detail – think beautiful adornment but just in white. So yes to the fleurets but no to the color!

backyard-candlelight-wedding-4

2.   Try Overhead String Lights

I absolutely love overhead string lights for a backyard.  It looks incredible, has that amazing DIY backyard feel but it can really brighten an evening wedding without adding too much light. Check out this adorable wedding from Los Angeles California below.  See the string lights – um obsessed!

backyard-candlelight-wedding

3.   Pillar Candles

Pillar candles and small votives are another way to add a lot of flare to a wedding without creating too much bright light. Everyone looks gorgeous in it.  Ugh!  Love it!

backyard-candlelight-wedding-5

What I love about pillar candles is that you can get them for relatively cheap and they are incredible details for a mantle, a table, or even a buffet table top.

4.   Wood Touches

Of course, you don’t have to spend too much time on this site to figure out that we absolutely adore DIY and freak out about all things that are chic yet well priced.  Wood touches are a great way to bring simplicity and DIY into your wedding without going too overboard.  We love love love all the handmade weddings and adore even more those incredible wood touches.  Check out these amazing little bits – your tias will be saying mija – how did you think of something so elegant, so beautiful.  Ay I can’t believe how stylish you are!

backyard-candlelight-wedding-3

5.   Chivari Chairs in White

Now that you have gone all simple with those incredible touches of elegance, you can splurge a little on the rentals. Yes, I mean the chair rentals.  Everything else can be candlelight color but splurge a little on the chairs – it will make the backyard seem like a beautiful venue.

Brooklyn’s Lion in the Sun Paperie

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

By Shelly Seong

Creating the perfect wedding invitation is one of the most stressful components of the entire planning process. It’s the first impression that you give to your guests and a crucial step to setting up the tone and overall theme of your wedding.

If you are looking for invitation designers that offer not only the finest paper products, but who can give you an additional selection of environmentally friendly goods, look no further than Melinda Morris’ family-owned paperie boutique, Lion in the Sun.

Read on to learn about how Melinda started her shop and find out the latest trends and styles that are popular in 2010, such as letterpress, digital printing, going green and bilingual (and even trilingual) invitations!

invite-lion-in-the-sun-1
Images via Lion In the Sun

1.) What inspired you to start your own custom invitation and stationery business?

Lion in the Sun is a family business my mom started in 1981. I grew up working in the shop, printing stationery, helping clients with customized invitations and merchandise buying.

After college I had a career for many years in the nonprofit sector as event planning and fundraising. I ultimately decided to go back to my roots and open my own shop in my neighborhood in Brooklyn. I have always loved that in this business we focus on happy occasions and help people through that process.  So In Feb. of 2001, I decided to take my event planning experience and my custom design history to open my own shop. It was a no brainer to keep the family legacy going and extend the Lion in the Sun brand to Brooklyn.

2.) There are so many green paper and print companies. What sets Lion in the Sun apart from the rest?

What sets us apart is that we represent many different printers and designers who offer many types of environmentally conscious options so we have many different more options for our clients to choose from to best fit what is important to them in style, design, materials, budget and still make choices that are good for the environment.

3.) What are some of the most popular printing methods in 2010?

Letterpress is definitely the most popular printing method right now. Although I would say given the economy, people are looking for ways to save money and digital printing is becoming much more common.

invite-lion-in-the-sun-2
Images via Lion In the Sun

4.) Is there a particular trend in style this year for the invitations, such as wording, components or accessories?

The new trends for invitations are reply postcards, or one piece invites with a perforated reply card. Additionally web cards are very popular, small business size card inserts that give the website information rather than many directions, hotels and activities.  I would say for wording the trend is toward short and sweet and fun. Fewer of my clients want long winded formal invites with quotes and poems. But many of clients have been providing space for a song request on the reply card.

5.) What are some invitation options for the clients who are die-hard green supporters?

Cotton paper I think is absolute best option. It creates beautiful luxurious invites, with a totally tree free approach ( and it is usually made from Recycled cotton to boot!!). It also limits the paper you use. Single envelopes without a liner and a single card with a web address for reply is the “Die-hard” way to go. Keep it super simplistic.

6.) Do you feature bilingual and even trilingual invitations? If so, can you give us some more information about this interesting option? (i.e. pricing, formatting the wordings and design, is this a budding trend in the wedding industry lately? etc).

Yes Bilingual invites have been very popular. Multi-language is probably the most common request we get (up to trilingual options). They can be used for both practical and sentimental reasons. When relatives and friends do not all speak the same language, we need to make sure everyone is able to read the invitation. Also, many couples feel by representing both languages, even if everyone can understand English, it is a wonderful way to represent both cultures.  For example, we will often include Spanish translation on an invitation for its cultural significance more so than communication needs.

This can be done in several different ways, by splitting the text into top and bottom, front to back or every other line translation can actually create a really interesting design element if each language is in a separate font and color.  Another popular way to achieve this multi-panel accordion folds which offers plenty of room for 3 languages and all on equal importance.

invite-lion-in-the-sun-3
Images via Lion In the Sun

On the flip side of this for a couple that are perhaps from another country but are now living in a US city, the invitation can reflect your new life in your city with images from where your wedding will be rather than where you came from. This is a great way to include family and friends from home into you new life and the wedding they will be attending.  Map images or building silhouettes are a very popular way to do this.

7.) Is there a way for out of state clients to personally get in touch with the designers and place a printing order?

People can always use the website as a guide and call us. But as soon as the website launches in a few short months it will be very easy. Stay tuned.

8.) Do you have any word of advice for the new clients (bride-to-be) in the process of getting their custom invitations?

My best advice is to go into a shop and talk to an expert in person. Don’t try to do it all yourself!  There is no substitute for seeing a paper and printing person. Also, allow your stationer to help guide you with design suggestions and wording that suits your event.

While it is great to create something fresh and new for your wedding, you also do not need to recreate the wheel. Learn from all the brides and grooms who have gone before you.

9.) I heard that you are going to open an online store very soon. When and what should we expect from the grand opening?

YES! We are so excited. We are working hard to finish up the last touches on everything and we plan to launch in late summer/ early fall. For now you can see a sneak peak on our “made in Brooklyn” page on our website www.lioninthesunps.com

DIY Make-Up Tips for Latinas!

Friday, June 18th, 2010

By Deanna Gabelein

Professional Makeup Artist
Austin, TX

Applying makeup for your wedding day can often require a little more work than your everyday repertoire. A couple of things to consider are 1) how your makeup will photograph and 2) whether you have appropriate products that will look good from morning brunch until after the reception.

Have no fear, armed with a few industry secrets, you’ll be able to do it yourself, no problem!

It’s a great idea to do a trial-run of your wedding makeup a week or two before the big event. Have someone take a picture of you to see how your makeup will appear in photos.

Also, don’t start any new skin care routines or products a month before the wedding. You’re going for “wow” reactions, not allergic ones. Of course, to get your teeth picture perfect, you may want to use over-the-counter bleaching strips prior to your Big Day.
Allot an hour to apply your wedding makeup. Likely, it’ll take less time than that but best not to be rushed. For best results, apply your makeup in natural light.

Okay, on to step number one:

1.    Prep

Wash your face, apply moisturizer and/or sunscreen, then apply a foundation primer. Foundation primers are fantastic. They extend the wear of your foundation, reduce the appearance of large pores and small wrinkles, and decrease oiliness. Yay!

2.    Foundation

Apply foundation to your entire face except your under eye area. I recommend using a high quality foundation with staying power for your wedding day. (I use Rae Cosmetics, www.raecosmetics.com, on my bridal clients. It looks great, is awesome for your skin, AND is humidity and sweat resistant. Major bonus for those outdoor summer celebrations.)

Be aware that foundations high in SPF, especially natural ones like zinc and titanium, can reflect light back at the camera and make your face appear lighter than the rest of your body.

3.    Eye Makeup

Okay. Your eyes are going to need extra definition to show up in photos. That means contouring with eye shadow, darker liner, and false eye lashes… are strongly recommended.

4.    Eyebrows

Brush eyebrows upright and fill in any gaps to define the shape using a brow pencil or powder. Remember, if you need your brows waxed, do it about 7 – 10 days before your wedding. The same goes for facials.

5.    Concealer

Use a concealer brush to apply flesh-colored concealer only to the under eye circles. None should be placed past the point where the circle ends. This prevents the dreaded reverse raccoon look in photos.

Most women benefit from a little concealer at the sides of the nose, too. Sometimes I’ll put a little at the bow (top) of the lips and underneath the middle of the lower lip to make the lips look fuller.

If you have blemishes on your face or chest, use a clean, fine-tipped eyeliner brush and apply flesh-toned concealer only to the blemish – not any of the surrounding area. This is the trick to making them disappear. Easy as pie! I mean, wedding cake.

6.    Face Powder

Brush face powder over your entire face including a light sweep under eyes to set concealer.

7.    Blush

Use a natural-looking blush color with minimal or no shimmer. Smile – then softly dust the blush from the apples of your cheeks all the way up the cheekbone.

8.    Lips –

Use lip liner. You’ll need the definition in photos… and it helps your lip color stay put. I prefer lipstick over gloss at weddings since it lasts longer, isn’t as transferrable or smudgy when you’re doing all that smooching, and usually looks better in photos. If you love your gloss, though, just don’t forget to use lip liner with it.

For touch-ups, don’t forget to carry oil blotting sheets, lipstick, and a small mirror in your purse. Have your Maid/Matron of Honor monitor your makeup throughout the day – telling you when you’re shiny or need some lipstick.

Happy Wedding Day, Gorgeous!

Real Wedding: Juan and Miranda in Ohio

Monday, June 14th, 2010

A special thank you to one of our favorite brides: Miranda Terrill now Miranda Medina. Congrats Miranda and thank you for sharing your wedding with us so quickly.

We cannot wait to share this adorable wedding with everyone!

Paratinovia: How did you and the groom meet?

We met on Match.com – he sent me a funny email about my profile picture and I fell for his humor and charm.

miranda-1

Paratinovia: How long did you date before getting engaged?

Miranda: We dated a year and a half before getting engaged.

miranda-2

Paratinovia: How did he propose?

Miranda: He proposed at sunset on top of the wall that surrounds the city of Cartagena in Colombia. We went there to spend time with his family (first time I met them). Everyone knew we were getting engaged except for me.
____

miranda-3b

Paratinovia: What were the main colors & theme of your wedding?

Miranda: I had A LOT of colors. I went with colors that were elegant, provoked emotion and complemented the season (spring.) We had a mix of sage green, floral pinks, gold, brown, cream and peach.
____

miranda-3c

Paratinovia: Is there any significance to your colors?

I didn’t want to use too much of one color – I see that in a lot of weddings. I focused on using colors that complemented the purpose of why I was using it. For instance – gold chair covers because the venue was already adorned in gold fixtures, sage green bridesmaid dresses because of the season, eclectic vase colors/shapes because of the “modern w/ a twist of vintage” look I wanted my wedding to have.
____

miranda-3

Paratinovia: How did you choose your wedding venue?

We wanted the venue in Columbus, OH because that’s where I’m from and where we currently live. We considered recommendations from friends, looked through magazines and toured about 6-8 venues before we decided on the Westin. I got goosebumps entering the ballroom for the first time, and I knew it had to be there.

miranda-4

Paratinovia: Did you incorporate anything unique into your wedding?

We had a photo montage (actual photos) of Juan and I growing up placed on a table during the cocktail hour. Our menu was a fusion of two cultures (Latin and Ohioan – *ha, ha*) – so we had American Bistro entrees (Chix, Filet) paired with Colombian side dishes (arroz con coco and plantains).

____

miranda-5

Paratinovia: What about Incorporating Cultural Traditions and Latina Background?

Our ceremonial readings – one was in Spanish and the other in English. The food at the reception (see above) and of course, lots of Latin music.
____

miranda-6

Paratinovia: Did you integrate any DIY (do-it-yourself) elements?

I wrote the invites, program, menu and all other stationery for the wedding. I worked with my coworker (a graphic designer) to design the stationery. I’m not a DIY gal, but I do appreciate artistic work – I bought a lot of pieces, including my jewelry, veil, headpiece, bridesmaids jewelry, men’s cufflinks, caketopper and photo props on Etsy.com
____

miranda-7

Paratinovia: How did you pick your team?

I used my hairstylist for my hair, found the makeup artist on Twitter, was referred to my photog (whom I stalked online for months and months and still do to this day, I love her work so much), was referred to the DJ, used my favorite bakery in town for the cake, and found a wholesale florist to do the flowers.

miranda-8

Paratinovia: What part did your coordinator play in helping you make those decisions?

I was the coordinator, with the exception of the coordinator at the Westin who managed the actual flow of events for the reception. I made every decision going on the input and advice from my husband and mother in law. Both were involved every step of the way and were a great partners in the planning process.
____

miranda-10

Paratinovia: Was budget a factor? If so in what way?

We were fortunate that our parents covered the cost of our wedding. We had one number to work with, and we made a rule that we would NOT go over (by a lot) :)
____

miranda-9

Paratinovia: What would you do different?

Because we did have that one budget to work from, we decided to go cheap on our transportation – we had vans drive our wedding party around instead of a limo. If I could do it all over again, I’d get the limo. Hey, you only get married once! :)

Using Red for Summer Weddings

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

I was looking all over the blogosphere early this morning when I came across an amazing bridal shower via Love and Lavender ( a great blog to join the ranks!) But, what I loved most about the bridal shower was the idea of using coral or “SPring” or “Summer” reds.

So many brides think to go away from corals and bright reds but when used the right way it can be magic – literally.

This example of red touches absolutely took this bridal shower to a different level and made us definitely consider red.

For our weekend inspiration, we want to leave you with this though – go RED!

Wedding Dress Trends for 2010

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

When searching for your “perfect dress”, you are considering every aspect of the big day….the location, the time of year and your wedding theme. Whether you’re going for romance, modern, traditional or edgy, we found some wedding gowns to match the mood of your big day!

Romantic

Have you always dreamed of a whimsical, dreamy ceremony? Try floral and feathery embellishments on this season’s airy fabrics. Dresses in organza and chiffon are perfect option for the bride aiming for a fairytale wedding.

Pricilla_of_Boston-Spring_10_163201011331

Modern

Those aiming for a sophisticated and contemporary vibe, many looks this year are crossing over from runway to bridal wear. Think of an interesting asymmetrical neckline, origami cuts and unconventional ruffles that will show off your chic eye on style.

Pricilla_of_Boston-Spring_10_163201011051

Classic

You can never go wrong with a traditional aesthetic. A classic A-line or ball gown silhouette in satin is flattering on all body types. A simple, clean dress will leave you the options accessorizing with statement jewelry or an unexpected pop of color.

Pricilla_of_Boston-Spring_10_932010134710

Edgy

Any type of unique cut and embellishment will look fitting for a more hip and trendy affair. Combinations of fringe and feathers on a mini will show off your retro attitude. For accessories, a birdcage veil is fashionable option instead of the traditional elbow length or cathedral.

Holy rockin’ wedding. Ok so we are total suckers for the rock indie wedding. But this amazing wedding via 100 Layer Cake by Max Wanger at the super cool Ace Hotel just totally made us stop and stare.

Alternative Bridesmaids Dresses

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Looking for a cool idea to get your girls excited about participating in the wedding? Being a bridesmaid can be super fun but not if you are put in some silly get up with too little color and not enough style.

Instead of thinking about the usual, consider a few non-traditional options:

1.   The Mexican Peasant Dress

When I saw this idea at a gorgeous backyard wedding in Southern California, I thought – Yes!  This is exactly the kind of fun outfit that makes the wedding feel casual and each girl feel unique.  I loved the wedding above because each bridesmaid really made the dress her own. Picture 14

2.  Different Dresses In the Same Color

We also love the idea of picking a shade of dress or a particular style but then letting your girls pick the dress that they think works best for them.

You can either coordinate the shape of the dress and the color and then let them go from there.

Picture 83

3.   Different Colored Dresses

Or just let your ladies pick different colors that coordinate with the wedding. This works especially well if each girl looks great in a different shade depending on their skin tone.  Plus if they can even pick their own style dress than each bridesmaid will feel comfy on your big day.

Boda Real: Ikela y Peter en Los Angeles, CA

Monday, June 7th, 2010

HOLA Novias.

Paratinovia: Did you incorporate anything unique into your wedding?

I wanted to incorporate the fact that Peter loves cooking. I found a website that helped me create a cookbook. I gathered traditional and fun recipes along with photo’s from both our families and created a book that we used as our Guestbook at the Wedding. We opted for white lounge cubes instead of cocktail tables, and we also used different Cities as our table names, to represent places we’ve been and places where our families are from (Cuba and Ecuador).

How did you pick your team?

Since he has two brothers, he wanted them both to be his best men. As for me I picked my dearest friend as my Maid of Honor. We then chose cousins and childhood friends.

Paratinovia: Was budget a factor? If so in what way?

Budget was a factor in the sense that we really had to make our pennies stretch. When it came to vendors I tried to do a lot of research and price comparisons. I learned that it doesn’t hurt to ask them to work with you on a better deal.

Real Wedding: Ikela and Peter in Los Angeles, CA

Monday, June 7th, 2010

HI Novias.

We are absolutely so excited to share this incredible new wedding with you.  The lovely Ikela was kind enough to send us ALOT of AMAZING info on her wedding so we cannot wait to share!

Paratinovia: How did you and the groom meet?

We first met in 2005 when we began working together.  We often times call it The Office, and If you happen to be familiar with the television show, it is easy to describe us as “Jim and Pam”.  At the time we first met, our lives were focused on different people and directions, but as time went on, the daily co-worker antics always brought us together and we soon became really good friends.

ikela-peter-525-1

It wasn’t until I had to relocate in 2007, and after our lives had already taken many changes personally, that we realized how close we had actually become.  After our first date, things became very clear and we no longer ignored the fact that we were more than just friends.  We started dating that summer.

[We absolutely love that Ikela wore these adorable blue shoes - ladies....a great way to introduce color and interest into your attire is to add pops of color through your shoes and your jewelry!].

ikela-peter-525-2

Paratinovia: How long did you date before getting engaged?

We were dating for a little over a year when he proposed.  We were an official couple Labor Day weekend of 2007, and he proposed exactly a year later, Labor Day of 2008.

ikela-peter-525-3

Paratinovia: How did he propose?

It was Labor Day Weekend 2008 when we headed to Lake Havasu to stay at his family’s vacation home for the long holiday weekend. We went with both our parents, who were in on the surprise.  We arrived late that evening and were welcomed by lightening and thunder including some other minor setbacks due to monsoon season.  After a few slight delays the next day, the sun came out and we finally managed to make it onto the water, but it wasn’t until later that night, when he got me out of the house by asking me to go to the supermarket with him (to throw me off).  We ended up on a mysterious drive in the dark towards a familiar lighthouse.  It was very suspicious yet very romantic when we parked near the water.  We got out of the car and the only thing I could see was city lights and lightening in the distance.  This is where he got down on one knee, and opened a brightly lit box.  He proposed…and I said yes :)

ikela-peter-525-4

Paratinovia: What were the main colors & theme of your wedding?

Our main colors were Aqua Blue & Brown.  If I had to describe a theme for our wedding it would have to be somewhat modern with a Spanish vintage flare.

ikela-peter-525-5

Is there any significance to your colors?

Yes, they have been a favorite of mine for many years.  I tried to pick other color schemes, but I kept coming back to those two.

ikela-peter-525-6

How did you choose your wedding venue?

We had decided from the very beginning that we wanted to have an outdoor reception and great food.  Since his family is Cuban they suggested we check out a local Cuban Venue.   We liked the food and that the venue capacity was exactly what we were aiming for.  The outdoor terrace was also the perfect blank canvas to make our vision come alive.

ikela-peter-525-7

Paratinovia: Incorporating Cultural Traditions and Latina Background?

We did have a traditional Catholic ceremony with Laso & Aras.  We also had traditional wedding candies brought in from my relatives who flew in from Ecuador, and Salsa dancing.

ikela-peter-525-8

Paratinovia: Did you incorporate anything unique into your wedding?

I wanted to incorporate the fact that Peter loves cooking. I found a website that helped me create a cookbook. I gathered traditional and fun recipes along with photo’s from both our families and created a book that we used as our Guestbook at the Wedding. We opted for white lounge cubes instead of cocktail tables, and we also used different Cities as our table names, to represent places we’ve been and places where our families are from (Cuba and Ecuador).

Paratinovia: Was budget a factor? If so in what way?

Budget was a factor in the sense that we really had to make our pennies stretch.  When it came to vendors I tried to do a lot of research and price comparisons.  I learned that it doesn’t hurt to ask them to work with you on a better deal.

ikela-peter-525-9

Did you integrate any DIY (do-it-yourself) elements?

I loved incorporating DIY projects, I made my own flower hair piece, created the cork stands that held the name cards, and helped put together our Invitations.

ikela-peter-525-10

Paratinovia: What would you do different?

I would definitely have tried to stress less during all the planning; it really does go by so quickly.

Wedding Color & Inspiration from Tori & Dean’s Wedding

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Hi ladies…so you will never guess what we found on the incredible blog of Latina wedding photographer Elizabeth Messina. Tori Spelling & Dean’s amazing renewal of their vows.  Um yeah…what a find right?

Ok well I am kinda a huge fan of the show so I am totally freaking out about Tori’s amazing choices of details.  I absolutely love her home decor so I knew that when I saw her name in the title of Elizabeth’s blog post we were in for a real treat.  I mean Tori has great style – think modern rustic meets Kelly Weartsler.  Exactly my thoughts – AMAZING!

By Shelly Seong

“Eat Cake Be Merry!”

The phrase is used quite appropriately in all festive occasions and weddings are definitely one of them! Furthermore, this particular expression is the name of a New York City based bakery founded by the talented Liz Shim, who is also the head designer.
