Color Inspiration Board #40: Mint, Cream, Yellow & Grey

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

When we started speaking with Junia & Andres about featuring their wedding, we were so excited! They are an incredible couple with incredible taste.

Color-pallet-yellow-mint-cream-grey

How did you and the groom meet?

Junia: Aye…there’s a very cute and epic story that follows whenever anyone asks how we met and how long we’ve been together. For this reason I wrote a short story about how we met and had it on our wedding website for all our guests to read.

Paratinovia: How did he propose?

He planned a little weekend getaway to Upper Lake, in Northern California. Said he just wanted it to be relaxing, have a picnic by the lake and stay in a cute bed & breakfast. The idea of him proposing to me totally crossed my mind too! We spent all of Saturday lounging around but when the day ended and he still hadn’t asked me, I convinced myself it wasn’t going to happen on this trip. Sunday came, we had a great breakfast, drove around and then searched for a spot to have a picnic. We must have stopped at five different locations for our “picnic”, because we just drove and drove for hours. He kept saying he wanted to find a better spot. When we finally found a spot that he was happy with we set up our little area, I started reading my book and he went off with our video camera to film himself the minutes before he was going to ask me to marry him (so I later found out). He came back, set up the camera so it faced us, took the book out of my hands and I knew! He was so nervous, I giggled, cried, and just like that, after 15 years of knowing each other, he said he’d love nothing more then to see what I would look like as a cute little old lady who he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

ParatiNovia: What were the main colors & theme of your wedding?

Yellow, grey and sage were our main colors. Picked because they’re the colors I wear so often and compliment each other so perfectly. As far as setting a theme for our wedding, we wanted a blending of modern, graphic design elements, and traditional Mexican touches to come together to make an awesome wedding. We also wanted it to be super fun!

Backyard Wedding Details from Sitting in a Tree

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

By: Candice Lapin

Looking for some cool ideas to integrate into your wedding this summer. We absolutely loved a few of the ideas we spied on the Sitting on a Tree blog.

Mason Jars

Instead of using traditional gifts for the guests, this bride and groom when with mason jars. We also love the idea of decorating a table with adorable mason jars. Cool!

They can be great for pouring small glass of wine which go perfect with tapas right ladies.

Typewriters

We love unusual table details especially for the entrance table. This old school typewriter will be sure to make your wedding unique and quirky.

Weekend Tips: Consider a DIY Dessert Bar

Friday, May 21st, 2010

By: Candice Lapin, Founder

Thinking about what types of desserts to include for your wedding? Whether you are having an intimate backyard wedding or a cool casual beach soiree, a dessert bar can be a chic way to give your guests an assortment of desserts without breaking the bank.

cocktail-and-dessert-bar-1

Think Outside the Box

The French actually serve cheese with their dessert.  Its a great option for those that perfect salty over sweet. Serve the cheese with jams, fruit spreads and small crackers.
cocktail-and-dessert-bar-2

Small Bite Sized Desserts

Another easy way to bring a lot of color to the table is to change up the types of dessert you serve. It is pretty stuffy these days to just have one type of anything. So mix it up and offer cupcakes, dulce de leche bars, or even chocolate bite sized madeleines.
cocktail-and-dessert-bar-3
cocktail-and-dessert-bar-4
cocktail-and-dessert-bar-5

Decor Goes Along Way

Remember, it isn’t just what you serve but how you serve it so make sure that you put all of these adorable and assorted treats onto different types of serving plates, trays and even raised cake plates.
cocktail-and-dessert-bar-6

Budget Tip: Consider Making the Dessert Bar DIY

Of course, none of this actually has to break the bank. You can achieve a unique dessert bar all by yourself.  Determine how much you want to spend on desserts. Yes, that is right. Come up with a budget.  If you have $500 to spend on desserts, you can absolutely be wise (and even bake some of the desserts yourself).  The easiest way to go is head to your local baker and discuss what they could do for the budget. Could they provide cookie bars, cupcakes and small cake bites?  Then see what they can do for what price…

The Super Cheap and Cheerful Option:

If you are really concerned about budget, then consider baking and creating your own dessert bar. What a great way to ask the Madrinos and other Tias to get involved in the big day.  Or what about asking a few primas to get in on the organizational action.  Think about it?  Perfect…right!  There are probably a few incredible bakers in the family.

So, what are you waiting for.  Invite everyone to bring their favorite baked goods and display them at the dessert bar!

Funky Wedding Details from Sayulita Mexico!

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

By: Candice Lapin, Founder

Hi Novias!  I absolutely love funky details and decor, as you probably well know.  And, this wedding was no different.  I was scanning and scouring the blogosphere when I came across this beautiful wedding.  Then when I started to look closely….I realized I knew the bride!

She is a fellow Angeleno with impeccable taste and quite frankly an impressive attention to detail.  She is a huge fan of Marc Jacobs, the designer, so you can see lots of fun quirky details like her shoes – which we absolutely cannot get enough of.

I especially love the low kitten heels which are pretty perfect when you consider you might have to be on your feet all day!

Ok…so enough already.  Here are the deets:

Real Wedding: Fanny & Luis in Monterrey, MX

Monday, May 17th, 2010

By Shelly Seong

We absolutely love, love, love this cute and quirky little couple! Daniela Garza did another wonderful job of portraying the couple’s particular style and transformed it into an unconventional photo shoot. Instead of the traditional and often predictable setting at the beach or a wedding studio, this creative couple definitely thought outside the box and infused their personal taste that perfectly defined their characters. Comic books, toy store, a pair of Chuck’s with a tux and feathered plumes? Yes, please! Take a look at some of these delightful pictures to help stir your inner creative genius.

Color Inspiration Board #38: Pink Lemonade & Grass

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

By: Para ti Novia Staff Writer

Get inspired novias and novios (thank you to the gentleman that have wanted to be included)! Spring is the season for vibrant colors and bold choices.  Outdoor weddings are immensely popular for this season and in order to make a bold and lively statement at your wedding, consider opting for a wedding color palette in pink lemonade, green grass, yellow and cream (instead of your typical white).

Aside from the obvious (i.e. flowers), don’t be shy to go a little crazy with bright colors like pinks and greens for your decor, cake and table settings.  Instead of fall blushes and roses, think in bright pinks and greens that you can make preppy or even a little Palm Beach (hello Lilly Pulitzer).

Check out these incredible images from Rebekah Westover, they are sure to get you ready to start thinking color palettes.

Color Palette: Pink Lemonade, Green & Yellow

For those of you who are wondering just how to pull this all off, we loved the details from the wedding below. This bride definitely thought out of the box.  Just check out the cool crisp parasols in vibrant colors.

ParaTiNovia: How did you and the groom meet?

We both met while attending college at DePaul University in Chicago, IL. We both worked in the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs one year and just happened to study abroad to the same location (Bahamas). We got to know each other and became good friends on the trip. The friendship grew as we worked on our assigned research projects together when we returned.

Pool is a very beach-like color that reminds us of the Caribbean ocean. The tan linen clothing was like the sand on the beaches.

How did you choose your wedding venue?

ParaTiNovia: We knew we wanted to get married in the Caribbean since our relationship started to blossom while we were both on a study abroad trip in the Bahamas. We also wanted to get married at a beautiful, yet affordable venue. Maria, our travel agent at the time (STA Travel) suggested that we look at the Dominican Republic. After comparing all possible hotels in the Punta Cana area, we finally settled on Dreams Punta Cana because it was affordable, family-friendly and the beautiful. It also helped that the website was up to date and resourceful and the wedding coordinator was very responsive.

ParaTiNovia: Did you integrate any DIY (do-it-yourself) elements?

Tyneka: We wanted to do as many DIY projects as possible so the invitations were handmade, complete with starfish, as well as the fans/programs for guests. Instead of wearing shoes, the bridesmaids and some of the guests made foot jewelry fit for walking in sand. With the extra materials, we made matching jewelry for the men to wear on their wrists. Jennifer Lara, one of the bridesmaids made small soaps cast in seashell molds which were waiting on the guest beds with a note from the us as they arrived in their rooms.

ParaTiNovia: Did you incorporate anything unique into your wedding?

There was nothing especially unique about our actual wedding. We did ask all of our guests to join us for a day trip to Saona Island the day after the wedding. EVERYONE enjoyed themselves on that trip.

ParaTiNovia: Incorporating Cultural Traditions and Latina Background?

There were no specific cultural traditions incorporated in the wedding ceremony itself, but the nature of having the wedding in the Dominican Republic lent itself to having traditional foods and music indigenous to Latin culture.

ParaTiNovia: How did you pick your team?

The groomsmen and bridesmaids both consisted of long-time friends and close family members. Of course, they also had to be committed to travelling with us to Punta Cana. If by team you mean vendors for our various needs, most of the work was done for us. The beauty of having a destination wedding is that the wedding coordinator at the venue usually takes care of things like the flowers, cake, food, music, space and officiant as a park of the wedding package. Our actually won the services of our photographers, Cory & LaRae Lobdell of LifeWork Images, by participating in a Destination Wedding Photography Giveaway that we found out about by attending a Bridal Expo in Chicago. We are SO blessed to have won their services and we continue to be humbled by their great talents. Our travel Agency, STA Travel, is a vendor we have used since we were in college. They have great service and they are very helpful when it come to coordinating payments guests and making sure proper insurance is in place.

ParaTiNovia: What part did your coordinator play in helping you make those decisions?

The wedding coordinator at Dreams laid out the options that we had for the package that we purchased and we verified these choices on arrival. It was very simple. She was very helpful when it came to meeting our needs related to the beach set-up for our wedding.

ParaTiNovia: Was budget a factor? If so in what way?

Budget was a factor in our choice to have a destination wedding. We didn’t want to be in debt for years to come so we set a budget that we thought was reasonable and would allow us to pay off the debt (including what we spent on our credit cards) within 6 months of our marriage. This was important because we also had to take into account expenses for the post-wedding brunch in Chicago that we had planned for 8 months after our wedding.

ParaTiNovia: What would you do different?

We both would have called our best friend who was flying in the day of the wedding to make sure she would not miss her flight. She made it to the reception, but it would have been great to have her there with us.

Top Three Trends in Wedding Tents

Friday, May 7th, 2010

by: Candice Lapin, Founder

Whether you are having a wedding in fall, winter, spring or summer, tents are always in season and in fashion.  Most brides think that just because they have a summer or spring wedding means they don’t have to even think about tents, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.  Tents can be perfect for protecting guests from the elements including light spring drizzles or even the hot summer sun.  We wanted to help you educate yourself not just on what is cool and chic in terms of trends but give you a little education and 101 at the same time.

Tent Dictionary

Ceiling.

Yes, even tents have ceilings.  Whether a vinyl, parachute or other fabric material, talk to your tent company about your options for ceilings.

Lighting.

You can absolutely light the inside of a tent.  From chandeliers to Christmas lights, tents create a beautiful atmosphere especially when bathed in light.

Climate Control.

Many tent companies will have a way to help create some sort of climate control, i.e. a way for your to cool and heat your guests.

Sidewalls.

Many tents, whether a bohemian fabric tent or a plastic tent may have “side-walls” that can be easily detached.  Discuss the sidewalls with your tent rental company.

Our Favorite New Trends In Tents

1.   Canopies

From cool breezy outdoor ceremonies, to fun wine valley weddings, canopies are making a big splash on the wedding scene for summer and spring weddings.  They are light breezy and typically made from light parachute material for the more fresh look.  Unlike plastic, they don’t cause heat to gather inside the tent and are more pliable.  For a cool undersigned look, gather a set of canopies together and make it feel more homespun.

2.  Circus Tents

Dramatic circus tents are also a cool alternative to a classic tent.   Circus tents tend to have dramatic ceilings with a swooping look.  These can really be made even more dramatic by lighting them with cool chandeliers for a turn of the century vintage look.

3.  Moroccan Tents

For those of you who like a little more color, Moroccan tents can be an incredible alternative to basic white.  Colorful and often jeweled, they can transport your guests to a faraway land.

Are you ready to integrate a tent at your wedding? We thought so….

The Blog: How being too matchy with your colors can be a good thing

Sometimes matching your colors from top to bottom can look surprisingly stylish. Coordinating the green with the black will also desaturate the colors so that your wedding doesn’t look too overwhelming.

Delicious Citrus Drink Ideas for Your Wedding

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

by: Fernanda Kelly

So you’ve decided to have your wedding during the hottest season of the year. Hopefully you’ve managed to make the reception area as cool as possible either by selecting air conditioning for the reception or some sort of shade cover for the ceremony and reception.  Phew, now you can check that off the list. But, did you remember to include a great signature cocktail to cool your guests down all night through the reception?

Experts say this year will be one of the hottest summers we’ve ever had, at least in the Southern half of the U.S. Don’t worry. You are in rhythm.  It so happens to be that in 2009 there is an increasingly popular trend for mixed drinks at weddings.  Not just any mixed drink though, but one that goes in accord with your culture, so you can transport your guests, without the plane ticket, to Cuba (Mojitos), Brazil (Caipirinha), Mexico (Tequila Sunrise) etc, just by the sip of their drink.

We will put aside the theory that drinking alcohol during hot days actually dehydrates.

To help you get started  Paratinovia.com and mixologist Chance Newton have put together some ideas for drinks made out of fresh natural fruit to keep your guests cool and refreshed. In fact, these drinks will keep your guests dancing all night. And not only that, it will make your wedding one of the most memorable and original festivities they have ever been to!

Here are some ideas:
