The Blog: Light and Dark Contrasting Table Decor

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Just because it’s springtime, that doesn’t mean brides need to stick to only bright tones. Check out this refreshing table decoration that contrasts the brightness of the yellows and pinks with the dark navy blue color of the table cover.

This color coordination helps the bright spring-like colors to pop out and make a bold statement through the darkness of the navy blue.

Latina Spotlight: La Comida

Friday, April 30th, 2010

By Veronika Lazabal

There’s no better place to add some Latin spice to your reception than at dinner time. Start with your appetizers: Spanish tapas (bite sized apps that come in a huge variety of flavors and varieties) make the perfect cocktail hour munchies. Talk to your caterer about including gambas (shrimp in garlic sauce), tortilla (a thick potato and egg omelet cut into squares) or spicy aceitunas (Spanish olives).

For dinner itself, you can keep the Spanish vibe going by serving Paella or arroz con pollo or Paella.

Having a Mexican fiesta? Why not set up a food station that includes flavorful rice, beans, corn tortillas, and fajitas? Or, how about a taquiza? Carne asada or al pastor with all the trimmings (diced onions, tomatoes, and cilantro) makes for a delicious throwback to your heritage.

Spanish Chicken & Chorizo Paella

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 chicken, cut legs, drumsticks and thighs
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 4 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 pound Spanish style chorizo links, cut into slices on the bias
  • 2 cups short-grain rice (recommended: Valencia or Arborio)
  • Pinch saffron threads
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen green peas
  • Lemon wedges, for service

Directions

Heat a paella pan or very large, shallow skillet or pot, preferably with 2 handles over high heat.

Cook’s note: A large cast iron skillet would work here.

Pour in the olive oil and let it heat up. Season the chicken all over with salt, pepper and paprika. Sear in the olive oil until browned all over. Transfer to a plate with tongs.

Lower the heat to medium and saute the onions and bell pepper until softened. Stir in the diced tomatoes, chicken broth, and chorizo. Bring the liquid to a boil and then stir in the rice and saffron. Add the browned chicken pieces. The rice should be completely covered with liquid. Cook the paella without stirring for 20 minutes. When the liquid has all been absorbed, pour the peas over the top of the pot, turn off the heat and cover the pot with a kitchen towel. Let stand 5 minutes and then serve with lemon wedges.

Spanish Tortilla

Ingredients

nocoupons

  • 1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes (about 2 medium)
  • Extra-virgin olive oil, for frying (about 4 cups) See Cooks Note
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced (1 1/2 pounds)
  • 4 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 10 large eggs
  • Serving suggestions: sliced chorizo, roasted pequillo peppers, or crumbled goat cheese or Sofritto, recipe follows

Directions

Peel and thinly slice the potatoes. Soak slices in water for 10 minutes. Drain and dry completely in a salad spinner. Meanwhile, pour enough olive oil into a large saucepan so it’s about an inch deep. Heat over medium heat until a slice of onion bubbles gently when placed in the oil, about 310 degrees F. Add the onions and fry, stirring occasionally until just golden, about 8 minutes. Scoop the onions from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper-towel lined baking sheet.

Add about half of the potatoes, and fry until lightly golden and a little puffy, about 10 minutes. Scoop the potatoes from the oil, add to the onions. Repeat with the rest of the potatoes. Reserve the oil. Season the vegetables with 3 teaspoons of the salt. (The preparation of the vegetables can be done up to 2 hours ahead.)

Break the eggs into a large bowl. Whisk just enough to combine but not so much that they get loose and runny, about 15 times. Add the vegetables and remaining 1 teaspoon salt.

Heat a medium (10-inch) nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of the reserved oil and heat. Add the tortilla mixture and stir briskly with a spatula to get peaks and valleys in the folds of the egg, about 2 to 3 minutes. Stop stirring and reduce the heat to low, cover and cook until the eggs are set but still pretty loose, about 5 minutes. Lay a flat pan lid or a plate on top and invert the tortilla. Add more oil to the pan if needed, and slide the tortilla back into the pan, cover and finish cooking until set and lightly brown, about 3 minutes more. Slide the tortilla out of the pan to a cutting board to cool slightly.

Cut into cubes or thin wedges and serve warm or room temperature as is or with 1 of the suggested toppings.

Cook’s Note: Yes that’s a lot of oil. But you can reuse it for other tortillas and in sauces, dressing or salads. It has a wonderful onion-y flavor that is great tossed on roasted potatoes or chicken.

We love this as a topper to grilled bread, with cheese, or as an alternative to cocktail sauce with shrimp or other seafood.

Sofrito:

nocoupons

  • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 onions, finely chopped (3 1/4 cups)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 6 ripe plum tomatoes (about 1 pound)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pimenton
  • Bay leaf

Heat the olive oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and sugar and half the salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and sweet, about 1 hour. If the onions begin to get really brown, add a splash of water to slow them down.

Meanwhile, cut the tomatoes, crosswise. Grate them on the cut side on the largest holes of a box grater into a bowl all the way down to the skins. Discard skins. Add tomato puree, pimenton and bay leaf to the caramelized onions, and continue to cook until quite thick and the tomato separates from the oil, about 10 to 15 minutes more. Season with the remaining salt or to taste. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Eco-Friendly Alternative to Papel Picado: Fabric Picado

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Looking to bring a fresh, youthful, and downright amazing quality to your backyard wedding fete? Concerned about keeping your paper usage down? Love traditional cultural elements, but want to put your own spin on things?

Papel picado can add a beautiful touch to any wedding reception décor, but have you ever considered working with fabric? Yes… fabric!

Take fabric that you already own (or pick up remnants at a sewing or crafts shop for a song) and think about dying and snipping it.

We all have tons of things around the house that we never use… instead of tossing them, why not re-use them in creative ways? It may just end up being the highlight of your wedding décor!

The Blog: Black is Back for Spring

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Most people dread the idea of including black in their wedding color palette, but here is an example where black makes the wedding “POP” and gives an umph! to the wedding. Choose a “green” location with a picture-perfect scenery and the black will definitely not drain the mood down!

Must Have Photography Tips from He & She Photography

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

It’s your wedding day and you’re looking for the perfect photographer to capture all the sweet memories. A word of advice from us to you: Find a photographer that you are comfortable with. Somebody who you can easily become friends with. On that note, we’d like to introduce He & She Photography. They capture not only the brilliant highlights of the entire wedding, but also the more intimate and natural encounters that take place throughout the day. They won’t miss a thing!

Paratinovia: What kind of shots should every wedding portfolio have?

As a once-upon-a-time-bride, and now as a wedding photographer, I have such mixed feelings about the fated “photography list”. As a bride, you want to ensure that all of the day’s details you spent so much time preparing and planning for are preserved in the time capsules of photographs. A photographer who knows anything at all about weddings will be aware of the obvious “must gets”. Some of these obvious shots are pictures of the dress, shoes, flowers, rings, the first kiss, the first dance, toasts, etc. However, with today’s DIY weddings, brides and grooms are putting even MORE details into their day, details that aren’t always obvious to a photographer. Such details might be a handcrafted list of the couples’ preferred beverages sitting crowdedly between bottles at the busy bar. Such items are important to note to the photographer before the big day.

he-she-4
Image Courtesy of He & She Photography

As a photographer, it’s important to feel trusted by your clients. When a bride hands you a three-page itemized list of the tiniest details of the day, it can be a little overwhelming. As an organized person, I greatly appreciate organization, especially on a wedding day! But, during a wedding, my camera is literally at my face the entire day, anticipating the ever unfolding “detail moments”. These are the moments people overlook or forget – the moments that AREN’T on the list. If I had my head buried in the couples’ three-page list the entire day, I would undoubtedly miss these fleeting moments.

he-she-2
Image Courtesy of He & She Photography

This isn’t to say that I won’t read a photography list if it is provided to me. I’ll read it to see if there are any special details I need to be aware of prior to the wedding. More often than not, though, this list is comprised of the obvious shots that any (good) photographer will capture. Obviously, I can’t speak for every photographer out there. I’m sure there are some that prefer to carry around a list, though we haven’t met any in our experience. So it always helps to just talk openly about it with your photographer and ask their preference. Whatever system works best for them is going to yield the best results for you!

he-she-6
Image Courtesy of He & She Photography

This brings me to my final and very crucial last point. When planning your day, allow yourself (and your photographer) extra time. I can’t stress this enough! I have yet to photograph a wedding where everything goes exactly as scheduled – it’s just the nature of weddings! Planning in some extra time will ensure that your photographer captures all of those “must get” shots.

Paratinovia: Is an Engagement Photo Session necessary?

Randy and I love engagement sessions, and so do our couples! An engagement session is a stress free and fun practice session before the wedding. It allows us to get to know the couple better, and vice versa. It helps the couple get comfortable in front of the camera and know exactly what to expect on the wedding day. The pictures on the wedding day are only improved because of it. Not to mention, you’ll walk away with some awesome candid pictures of yourselves! The power of a good engagement session is not to be underestimated. Personally, I feel it is one of the best investments you can make towards your wedding.

Paratinovia: Any tips on finding the perfect photographer?

When we meet with a couple, we look for the “friend factor” – can we see ourselves being friends with them? Even if, realistically, you won’t become the kind of friends that hang out every Friday night, it’s important to us, as photographers, that our couples identify with us (and vice versa). Whether we laugh at the same kinds of things, have a similar outlook on life, or have similar artistic tastes – if we can find something in common and really relate, then we know the rest is golden. Randy and I don’t want to convince you that we are “good”, almost like you wouldn’t want to have to convince someone to be your friend. Our personalities come through our work, and chances are that if you don’t like our personalities, you won’t like our work. Again, it may sound odd, but we’ve found it to be so true! Our inspiration comes from our couples, and if the “friend factor” is missing, then the muse is gone. Photography is such an intimate process and it takes sincerity of those on either side of the camera to create real imagery.

he-she-3

So, when looking for a photographer, find somebody with character. Find someone whose work gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling in the pit of your stomach and makes you want to jump in the air with excitement. That’s what good photography is all about, and that’s what real connections feel like. You’ll enjoy the process and the outcome so much more.

Real Wedding: Annette & Jesus in Commerce, CA

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Just as Annette and Jesus fell in love at first sight, we instantly fell in love with their story and the beautiful wedding theme color combination of chocolate brown, latte and ivory. It’s a mutual color between both the bride and groom and no other color scheme could have better represented this delightfully warm couple. After reading about how the groom proposed to the bride, we couldn’t help but swoon over how romantic the entire situation was. He was well prepared with a photographer to capture the moment! Read on to learn how these amazing couple became one and take a peek at some of their most memorable moments.

ParaTiNovia: How did you and the groom meet?

Annette the Bride: It was love at first sight. We would see each other out with our own group of friends, at parties, clubs or music events. I worked part-time at McDonalds which he frequent often. I later found out he would just go to see me. One night out, at a get together, I seen him hanging out with his friends. I really wanted him to come over to talk to me, but he was too shy. So, I asked a friend to hand him my number, the day was November 08, 1997. He called, and every time we would contact each other, we would talk for hours. We had so much in common and we both were excited to know about each other. 2 months later, (yes! 2 months!) he asked me out. It was January 1, 2008. Movie and almost dinner. I declined on dinner because I was too embarrassed to sit across from him and eat. Haha. Months later he asked me to be his g/f, and we have not been apart since. We always seemed to include each other in our wishes for the future. We soon realized we couldn’t be without each other.

ParaTiNovia: How long did you date before getting engaged?

Annette the Bride: 11 years. (getting our studies out of the way)

ParaTiNovia: How did he propose?

Annette the Bride: After 11 years, Jesus proposed, he sure made me wait, but he knew exactly what he was doing and could have not done it any better. It was a special time in my life… The day was Sat. March 28, 2009. Jesus took me to Newport Beach where he had made reservations to take us on a Gondola cruise. It was very romantic. He also hired a professional photographer to snap pictures of every moment. Then, to my surprise mid way through the cruise he proposed. Of course, I said yes!!!! It was the moment I had been dreaming about. Little to my surprise, he still had something up his sleeve. After the proposal, we headed to a restaurant for drinks to celebrate. We arrived at the restaurant and as we walked in, I heard Mariachi starting to play. He had contracted Mariachi and reserved the patio themed banquet room, which was located steps from the entrance. I noticed some familiar faces, the photographer (once again), our family and closest friends. WOW! He had sent out invitations for them to meet us there and celebrate. They had been waiting for us to arrive. I was shocked!!! I cried. Never had I’ve been so surprised!!!! He made me feel so special, something I will never forget. It was so emotional. I was in disbelief. I loved it!

The Blog: Alice in Wonderland

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Have you girls watched the movie yet? I know I know, the whole world is obsessing over the movie these days and even us at Para ti novia have posted several articles on the theme, but I just couldn’t resist sharing these amazing shots! I stumbled upon Rebekah Westover while surfing around and she is a photographer that I am slowly falling in love with!

This image reminded me of the scene where Alice shrank herself and walked through the tiny door into the world of Wonderland. The huge tree gives sort of an eerie feel, but I love it!

Top Tips to Stay “Green” on Your Wedding Day

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

By: Catalina Walsh

A green wedding? Is it possible? When you think about it, it really isn’t that difficult to employ the same principles: Reuse, save and be creative. We’ve got a few tips that will help you follow these principles while making sure that this celebration is all you ever dreamt it would be.

Invitations

You can save a small fortune and the planet by sending out electronic “save the dates” and electronic invitations. Invitations can be incredibly expensive running up to $25 or more an invitation. An electronic invite can often cost next to nothing, roughly 20 to 45 cents a sender.  There are some incredible websites that help you personalize them with multiple designs. If tradition is important to you, you can send out a printed invitation but ask your guests to rsvp electronically. This way you can at least save the printed rsvp cards. For green invitations, be sure to use recycled paper that hasn’t been bleached and that doesn’t have any plastic or metal.

Check out these amazing invitation vendors who can help you stay green:

Cocodot

Paper Less Post

Wedding Paper Divas

Pingg

Location

One of the easiest ways to reduce carbon emissions and keep your wedding green is to find a place that is close to your guests. This way you save your guests on the travel expenses and you save the environment from the bad impact that long-distance travel can cause. If your families are located far away from you and your groom, consider a central location for you and the groom.

Once your guests are at your destination you may want to consider arranging for group transportation to you venue.  A large tour bus or small vans can be a great option to transport guests to and from the reception back to your hotel.

Another great tip to save on electricity is to have your wedding begin during the day. An outdoor reception in the summer can be an incredible way to spend an afternoon and evening. The best part is that the sun sets late so you have plenty of daylight hours. Then, when you reception goes on into the night you can save on electricity by bringing in candles (especially those candles made from soy or bees wax).

Decorations

Use local flowers. You will save money and will avoid the impact on the environment produced by transporting flowers from remote places. Also consider reusing the flowers from the ceremony at the party. At the end your guests could throw the petals to the happy couple instead of using the traditional rice. Be creative! You can make a center piece out of desserts. You could also organize a party before the wedding for you and your friends or relatives to make these center pieces together.

1-800-FLOWERS.COM

Food and Drinks

Serve organic, local and seasonal food. You can donate the leftovers to a shelter or food bank. You can also save money by purchasing local and organic wines and spirits. If you can, rent the dinner plates, silverware and glasses.

Pictures

Giving disposable cameras to your guests is so 90’s! What’s in, is to ask them to upload their digital photos to your website. If you hire a photographer, ask him not to print out the proofs but to show them to you digitally instead.

Favors

Give your guests something they will really enjoy. How about organic chocolates or some natural soaps?

Planning a green wedding forces you to step out of the box and be more original. An out of the ordinary wedding is also an unforgettable wedding. Put that green and unique stamp on yours!

Inspiration Board #34: Baby Blue, Yellow, & Grass

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

By Shelly Seong

Check out this darling low-key spring wedding in the countryside with a traditional red barn and rolling hills in the background. The fundamental arrangement of a charming country-side wedding is to keep things fairly simple and sweet without incorporating elaborate and over-the-top embellishments. Doing so can evidently ruin the naturalism of the theme. Get inspired with images from Open Air Photography by Katie Stoops if you’re the country-chick with an appreciation for the homestead environment. In addition, check out some of Katie’s vintage-inspired pictures, which give off a peaceful and old-fashioned tone. Primary colors like yellow, green and blue are used to add a burst of color and splash to the backdrop of the rural areas. Besides, these are essential spring colors that you can’t go wrong with!

Forget the 4 tier cake! It’s all about simplicity at a countryside wedding. A traditional one layer chocolate and vanilla cake should do the trick!

Top Five Best Budget Tips for Wedding Bars

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

With a recession still in sharp focus, the word on everyone’s lips seems to be budget. Brides want to know just how to create one and how to keep to it so that it doesn’t cramp your/compromise on style especially when it comes to the alcohol. So, here are our tips to help you think outside the Bar and keep your wedding budget very much in tact:

Beer and Wine Please.

Consider limiting your bar to beer and wine. Though your cousin from [enter Anyplace Mexico here] might be cursing that there is no tequila, you’ll be laughing all the way to your fabulous honeymoon.

Signature cocktail Anyone?

A signature cocktail is a great way to limit the huddle at the bar and keep all your guests happy. You may have attended a few weddings now with cool signature cocktails and fun drinks named for the bride and groom.  Start the process by figuring out what your signature cocktail should be.  Then you and your hubby-to-be can create a few different outings aimed at creating just the right blend.  Take a few nights and stop at your favorite local pubs around town to try different combinations to find that perfect mix. It’s a great way to get him interested in the planning.

Stick to the Second Shelf!

Try limiting the types of drinks you offer. Stock the bar with rum, whiskey, tequila, vodka, beer and wine. Also, consider integrating lesser-known brands or mixing high and low brands at the bar to keep costs low. You can stock the shelves with crowd pleasers like Bacardi and Grey Goose and then mix in a Brazilian cachaca for inexpensive Capirinhas.

Real Wedding: Verenice & Brandon in Lake Travis, TX

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Planning a wedding should be an exciting initial step to a lifelong trail of fun memories. It should be about compromise and accommodation. Our lovely couple Verenice and Brandon did just that. From collaborating on a mutual color scheme to having the ceremony on an open lake, the couple laid down the groundwork for a successful wedding ceremony. We would love to share some of their memorable moments to inspire you!

Paratinovia: How did you and the groom meet? How long did you date before getting engaged? How did he propose?

Verenice (the bride): We met in high school my freshman year, his sophomore year, through a mutual friend who introduced us. We became good friends and stayed in touch throughout high school (I changed high schools and he moved to South Carolina).  And, in college Brandon finally got up the never to ask me out on a date when he moved back to Austin. We dated for 3 1/2 years before he proposed. We were on a family vacation on a cruise in Hawaii,  it was 4th of july and our boat was docked at an island watching the firework display when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I of course said yes, and we were married a year and a half later.

Paratinovia: How did you choose your wedding venue?

Verenice (the bride): We both really love the beach and wanted to get married on one but we also wanted our entire family at our wedding and knew many wouldn’t be able to make the trip so we opted for the next best thing and got married on the lake. We choose the Oasis because it is a very beautiful venue and we also had our year anniversary there when we were dating, it was the perfect place!

Paratinovia: Did you incorporate anything unique into your wedding (Cultural Traditions and Latina Background)? Did you integrate any DIY (do-it-yourself) elements?

Verenice (the bride): The traditional Mexican elements we were able to incorporate were the mariachi band that played through out the dinner, and of course our reception music that was a mixture of salsa, merengue and cumbia. I also walked down the isle to Shakira’s song “Tu”. We did everything our selves. We made the centerpieces, the cake and the parting gifts.

Paratinovia: What were the main colors & theme of your wedding? Is there any significance to your colors?

Verenice (the bride): The colors were black, silver and fuschia. Honestly we chose these colors because they were the only ones we could agree on (I never though he would agree with “hot pink” but he did) and we didn’t have a theme.

Paratinovia: How did you pick your team? What part did your coordinator play in helping you make those decisions? Was budget a factor? If so in what way?

Verenice (the bride): I found all my vendors through a variety of ways. Some where at the bridal extravaganza, others online at the knot and some were recommended. My coordinator at the Oasis didn’t have any part in helping me pick my vendors. Budget was a factor in that I didn’t want to cost my parents a fortune. I tried to pick the best but cheapest solutions I could find, except for the photographer I wanted the BEST and didn’t care how much that would cost.

Paratinovia: What would you do different?

Verenice (the bride): I would have taken some more time in researching my vendors, because our Dj was horrible and that was one of the most important aspects to our wedding. I also would have made some more time to incorporate a couple of traditions that my parents wanted to have at the reception.

Thank You! Creative Favor Ideas

Friday, April 16th, 2010

By: Veronika Lazabal

Ok, ladies… I know you’ve been scouring the internet in search of creative favor ideas. Well, search no more, because we’ve rounded up some of the coolest alternatives to key chains and bottle stoppers around!

A Yummy Idea

What’s a surefire way to make sure that your guests love your favors? Make ‘em edible! Personalized chocolates, cupcakes, or tiny baskets filled with candies make great giveaways. So do miniature versions of your wedding cake… wrapped in a festive box, they’re a unique favor that will remind your invitados of the fantastic time they had at your wedding.

Seasonal Surprises

Why not gift your guests with favors that reflect the time of year when you get married? Personalized envelopes of hot cocoa for a December wedding, beach towels for a reception on the sand, seed packets for a springtime soiree… you get the picture.

Go Green

Being eco-chic is always a good idea. Why not greenify your wedding by swapping out some of your vases of cut flowers for live ones—that way your gorgeous centerpieces can pull double duty as favors. Mini cactuses and succulents in pretty plastic pots also make great environmentally friendly take home gifts.

Pun Intended

Finally, make your friends and family smile with a cute tongue in cheek gift. It doesn’t have to be expensive to be memorable. Tulle baggies filled with gumballs (in your wedding colors, of course) are a big hit when accompanied by a fun, handwritten note—i.e.: “Mark and Sonia… Sticking Together!”

Top 5 Hottest Trends for 2010’s Spring Wedding Gowns

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

By Shelly Seong

Say goodbye to traditional all-white wedding gowns. Brides are now adding distinct embellishments and alterations to enhance the basic little white dress into something that is fabulous and runway-ready. 2010 spring fashion boasts new trends that showcase not only the obvious floral prints, ruffles and pastel colors, but also focuses on unique metallic embellishments, asymmetrical necklines, and dark hues, to name just a few.

Want to know the top 5 new style trends to snag for a Spring wedding in 2010:

Asymmetrical neckline

Want a chic and sexy style without revealing too much? If you think a classic strapless dress is too traditional and old fashioned, try a one shoulder dress to show-off your neckline and shoulders. Last year’s popular Grecian one-shoulder style is still hip and trendy.

Metallic touches in gold and silver

From sequins, prints, lace to added jewels, brides are adding shimmering shades of gold and silver to attain a goddess-like look that may perfectly suit an outdoor wedding. The details on the gown will literally make you shine as you walk down the aisle.

Black on White

Although it may seem very unusual to see black details on a wedding dress, more and more brides are opting for this look. A black satin sash or bow is an eye-popping detail against the overall white color of the dress. Black is not just for the Goth girl anymore!

Raw Edges

For the edgier, trendsetting bride, go for a dress with uneven texture for a couture-inspired look. These rough hemlines and details are a new unique bridal style and will definitely have all of your guests talking even after your honeymoon.

Mini Dress

For the quirky and eccentric bride who is looking for versatility, a mini dress is the perfect get-up for a fabulous spring wedding. The warm weather permits this particular look and is appropriate for both the ceremony and the reception.2010-spring-wedding-dresses

Amazing Gift Idea: Morandini de Castro Italian Food & Wine Packages

Monday, April 12th, 2010

By Shelly Seong

Looking for the perfect gift for a food-crazed bride or groom? Check out Morandini de Castro- Italy’s cultivating establishment of gourmet products that include pasta, cheese, jam, olive oil, condiments, coffee and the finest selection of wine, all packaged into a stunning personalized box.

Morandini de Castro’s founder, Helga Castro’s vision was to deliver “well-made things, the old scents and the love for Italy.” Read on to hear her first-hand account of the amazing inspiration, creation and growth of the company and what it has to offer.

Picture 6

1)      What inspired you to start this business and who is your target audience?

My love for Italy inspired me to start. During the year that I studied at Milan, a Japanese friend came to visit me. Before she left, she asked me to help her buy something for her family. I decided to bring her to Peck (Milan’s most famous food emporium). They had plenty of delicious marmalade, unlimited variety of pasta, cheese, sweets, charcuteri and such an incredible cellar. However after one hour we went out empty-handed! It was too difficult to choose amongst such an extensive variety. How can you decide amongst 500 labels of wine, pastas, sweets, charcuterie and a wide assortment of cheese? I believe it was probably in that moment when I realized how difficult it was for a foreigner to be able to take the best from the Italian gastronomic panorama. That’s when I thought to myself that I should bring the best selection to represent Italy to those who visit and that the products should come inside a box that captures the elegance of the country; a box to keep and fill up afterward with beautiful things. This company was created with quality and simplicity. We cater to private companies, gourmet shops, lifestyle shops, food and wine online shops, event organizers, tourism associations, Italian representations overseas, hotels, food enthusiasts and to all those who love Italy.

2)      What makes your products so special and different from other vendors?

It’s the amazing group of people who are involved with making the products that makes everything so special. We have put together old flavors, top quality ingredients and high end designs. Morandini de Castro offers a selection of the best Italian products, such as home-made pasta, Parmesan from the Apennines, balsamic vinegar from Reggio Emilia, the famous Mantovan jams and others. All of our products are labeled and wrapped elegantly inside a beautiful black and white box with different printed photos that depict scenes of the Italian’s Dolce Vita. Our aim is to extract the prime essence of Italy by choosing the best of our gastronomic panorama.

italian-cookie

3)      Is your store well-known amongst the locals of Italy? In other words, are your products something original for Italians?

We started this business in December 2006 so we are fairly new in the market. Italians are probably the most demanding customers that we have as they have a huge range to compare with. However they love our fresh image, the accurate selection of our products, and the idea of the boxes. They just love them!

italian-pesto

4)      Do you do personalized gift packaging for weddings? Can you accommodate to the bride’s request? If so, would there be an extra charge?

Yes we can. The cost will depend on the quantity and volume requested. We can make 3 boxes or 3,000! The more you request, the cheaper the price. We can also customize the labels with the date of marriage, etc. For instance in Italy, it is quite common to give an important gift to the bridesmaid and best man. We prepare beautiful gift boxes depending on each person’s distinct taste and style.

italian-box

5)      Can you make shipments out internationally? How much would the shipment fee cost and how long would it take for delivery?

The cost of the shipments is around $30.00-$60.00 , depending on the weight/volume. We send the goods with Fed-Ex in 48-72 hours. If the shipment value is more than $200,000 then we must be supported by an importer with an FDA registration. In LAX we work with B&B Partners, Thousand Oaks, CALIFORNIA 91360, so they will be able to do all the work. Due to the nature of the products (fine food) The FDA allows to send shipments at a non-commercial value (that means for own consumer purposes like gifts, etc.) You only have to make sure the total amount (value of the products) does not exceed the $200,000 limit. If someone would like to buy the products with a commercial purpose (i.e. to be sold in a gourmet store, or to be used in a catering service, etc.) They must have an FDA registration to import the goods. They can do it directly with us if they are registered, otherwise they can do it through our Partner B&B.

Picture 7

6)      Which product would you recommend for the perfect wedding gift?

Definitely the Eau d’oil Coffre two tins of Extra Virgin Olive Oil Selezione from SICILY & IMPERIA with a small notebook of fun-filled facts about the history and uses. They’re original and classy!

italian-oil

7)      For international customers, can they purchase products online?

We will have an online store by June 2010.

italian-balsamic

8)      What is the most popular item(s) sold?

The Red Truffled Sauce. It’s listed as one of the best sauces at NYC Fancy Food. The breadsticks with almonds that are made in Salento, which is in the south of Italy, are absolutely delicious!

italian-truffle

9)      Have you thought about having a catering service for weddings and birthdays?

Yes. We have some partners that support us for the catering service. We also organize small private parties, events (for 10 people) with assortments of cheese and jellies, honey, salami, prosciutto and a variety of wines from different regions.

mdc

10)  Is the actual store located only in Verona, or do you have any other franchise stores? If not, do you have any future plans of opening more stores?

We do not have a store we have a showroom- atelier in Verona. Due to a huge request by Privates we will open an online store this year. For the future we would like to create a franchise chain or corner gourmet stores.

Trends We Love: Black Wedding Dresses

Friday, April 9th, 2010

By Veronika Lazabal

You don’t have to be a goth girl to rock a fabulous black frock on your wedding day. In fact, noir dresses have been steadily gaining popularity for the past few years among celebrities and every day brides alike. If you’re looking for an unconventional and uber modern gown for your boda, consider going dark. Check out these amazing black dresses from the fabulous designer Romona Kaveza!

black-dress-1

Worried about looking too “over the top”? No worries: we’ve got all the tips and tricks you need to keep your black dress classy… and banish the Morticia Adams feel once and for all.

black-dress-2

Keep Your Make-Up Light

Yes, smokie eye liner and deep red lipstick make for dramatic, sensuous make-up, but paired with a black gown, the whole vibe can come across as overly dark and heavy. Instead, keep your face fresh and light. Consider creamy peach and soft pink tones to keep you looking like the bell of the ball.

Stick with Lighter Fabrics

Nothing says angst-ridden teenager like layers of black velvet. Opt for lighter alternatives like satin, silk, and chiffon and you’ll be beautiful in black. Another way to make sure your dark gown is airy? Keep the bodice snug. A tighter top paired with a flowing skirt will add a hint of the traditional wedding dress shape— accentuating your curves and making a black gown as feminine as possible.

Mix in Some Other Hues

One of the best ways to wear a black wedding dress might just be to temper it with a splash of other colors. Add white or ivory for a romantic twist on a classic gown, or mix deep red and black for a dramatic look that everyone will be talking about. Silver and deep blue are two other choices for accent colors that look great paired with a black vestido.

Keep Your Jewelry Minimal

Finally, remember that a black wedding dress is definitely a statement piece. Too much jewelry can make it look costumey, so keep it simple, baby. A fabulous pair of drop earrings is more than enough to adorn you.

Now go work your flair for unconventional style in your awesomely black dress!

Fine photo journalism begins before the camera is even in hand. Representing the subject is much more than just capturing the image. It is taking the persona, or the spirit of an event and creating art from that. I adhere to that philosophy, giving the client more than just a picture, but a moment in time.

I have always aimed at giving the customer more than they asked for. I keep on the cutting edge of technology, and I try to never forget the tried and true techniques that have gotten photography to where it is today. Being at the right place at the right time is all that matters, and those photographers who can capture the moment are an exclusive group. Upon graduation from Brooks Institute of Photography, I interned with the famed Annie Leibovitz  and later assisted for two years. While in New York I rediscovered my style and form and interpreted my works from experience.

Clients I have worked with include Vanity Fair, Vogue, Ralph Lauren, Hermes, Sketchers, Dr. Martin, Honda, Saab, Volvo, Infinity Motors, Harley Davidson, AG Jeans, Kitty Fashion, Harper’s Bazaar, Salvadore Ferragamo, just to name a few.

Wedding Traditions of Chile

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

By Veronika Lazabal

One of the most fabulous parts of planning your wedding is deciding which of your cultural traditions to incorporate into your big day. When you’re a Chilean chica, you have some particularly fun cultural choices to choose from.

For example, horses are a big part of Chilean culture, and it’s not uncommon for the newly married couple to ride away from the wedding ceremony on horseback. Many grooms in Chile even bypass the tux and choose instead to wear the traditional clothing of a Huaso, or Chilean cowboy.

Like all of Latin America, music and dancing is a big part of every wedding celebration in Chile. Here, the national dance is called the Cueca, and this lively style of folk stepping is usually performed by a group at the very beginning of the reception—before any of the guests’ dancing or eating begins. (Speaking of which… no matter what’s on the menu, make sure that you serve Pisco Sours. It’s the drink of choice in Chile)

Whether in Santiago or Stateside, a traditional Chilean wedding is always a colorful and fun affair!

A one-color bouquet, especially an eye-popping bundle of fuchsia flowers, will definitely be an inviting visual. The jewel piece with the feather extensions is also a great accessory idea.

Wow! Just take a look at this exquisite reception hall. The color theme is classic and simple, but the floral decor adds a splash of pink and red to create a beautiful contrast.

This wedding cake is sweet and simple, but the floral and ribbon outlining on the 5-tier cake transforms it into an elegant display pleasing both the eyes and your taste buds. The initial, “R” on top of the tier calls for the finishing touch.

Real Wedding: Jane & Edgar in Austin, TX

Monday, April 5th, 2010

When the amazing Samantha Darr, a wedding planner in Texas, sent us this wedding we knew we had to share.  From the exquisite bouquet in hot hot pink to the gorgeous fete at the lovely Driscoll Hotel, we knew this one would be good!

Plus, the story of the couple was just too amazing to share.  Did you know they had to cancel their wedding when their first venue went out of business?  That’s right…it went out of business.

Yet, this amazing couple kept plugging along. And thank god they did because just check out the incredible results.

The Butter End Cakery

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Want a totally unique, fun and beautiful wedding cake? Then the Butter End Cakery is the perfect match for you…

When I moved from NY to LA in 2008, I thought a change of pace was in order… perhaps a continued pursuit of a career in ‘the biz’…. but then,  a year into my stay, cancer paid me a visit. Instead of wondering who was going to cast me bald, I tapped into my art background and directed a lot if my energy into the kitchen, where I honed some mad fondant skills and tweaked favorite recipes that I’ve been spoiling my friends and family over the years. The creative outlet that designing cakes gave me was a life-saver… and the reaction from people who see and taste the cakes is just as good, if not better, than any applause on any stage. This business kind of ‘found me’. Now I’m out of the test kitchen and into a commercial kitchen in Venice. I feel lucky and happier than ever.

Jamaica’s Cakes

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

When Jamaica designs a wedding cake, she begins with the customers. Her goal is to reflect both the personality of the client and the look of the wedding. Every cake is an original. Jamaica draws her ideas from photos or cut-outs brought in by the customer, elements of the wedding plan, the dress, or anything else that the consumer suggests. Jamaica only uses the highest-quality ingredients, makes everything from scratch, never freezes her cakes, and the flowers she uses are always fresh.
