Create a Flower Budget for Your Wedding

Monday, November 30th, 2009

By: Jennifer Juhos, Floral Expert

Ok ladies… now that you have given some thought to your wedding budget, how do you know how much to allocate towards flowers? There are many schools of thought, but the most popular way to establish a budget is to set aside 10% of your entire wedding budget for florals.

If flowers & décor are really important to you, cut back slightly on other areas of the wedding so that you can really accentuate the space with decor! Once you have determined your flower budget, you can then decide where you want most of the decor. Personal flowers, like bouquets & boutonnieres are a must, so don’t skimp there!

You may want to consider lightly decorating the ceremony and cocktail areas, in order to really showcase the reception space… after all, this is where your guests will be spending most of their time. Ask your florist for a detailed proposal so you can see the breakdown and make changes, if necessary. Now go grab your floral wands and create a magical event!

Real Wedding: Trianna & Robb (The Reception)

Monday, November 30th, 2009

We just couldn’t get enough of Trianna and Robb’s beautiful real life wedding so we thought we would share more details from this fantastic fete straight from San Antonio.

We also thought we would share some of Trianna’s brilliant words of wisdom on how to actually enjoy your wedding!  Yes, that’s right…how to actually remember to get some time in between you and your esposo at the wedding reception!

The Food

Trianna: We spent on the caterer.  I wanted to have a delicious dinner, it was important to me to start the party with a good meal.  I also wanted everyone to feel attended to and to be served all at once, so we had one server per table.

Bridal DIY: What Trianna did herself!

For the Save the Date, we included a strip of “Photo Booth” photos.  We included two photos of us together and one each of us as kids.  We added the text “Because you shared in our lives through your love – Trianna and Robb”.  I made the strip of photos, printed them and cut them so that they could be included with the Save the Date.

Most of our guests were from out of town, so we made welcome baskets.  We made those ourselves.  Each person got some snacks, water and a packet that included wedding information.  All was wrapped in a white fabric and tied with colorful ribbon and those traditional, colorful Mexican papier mache flowers and then the bag was put in a cowboy hat.  I wanted to mix the Latin and Texan flair!  For the kids, the cowboy hat was filled with fun toys, like coloring books, dart guns, jax, etc.  In addition to some toys and cowboy hats, the young girls were given a crown, you know the one made of the papier mache flowers with colorful ribbon hanging down the back.  They loved them and still have them in their rooms!

As an extra for my girls, I welcomed them with a monogrammed make-up case and everything from Advil to hand cream and water was in there.  Robb gave his guys a pocket knife each engraved with their initials.

I made labels that I put at the top of stirrers for our signature drinks during the cocktail hour: Golden Groom and Blushing Bride (I wish they had taken photos).

What would I have done differently…

Stick to your guns, within reason!  There were some things I bent on and I wish I had stayed true to my original vision.

One of the things I bent on was decorating the stage.  I was told the stage didn’t need decorating since the band would take care of that part, but in retrospect, I should have decorated the stage. Oh, and be sure you work out décor with the band.   I know it sounds silly, but be sure you tell them that you don’t want wires being seen and that their lights are positioned nicely. Oh and, have a playlist on an iPod for when the band takes a break!

Oh, and another thing I didn’t think of was lighting.  I set the mood for the romantic dinner, but completely forgot about the dancing.  I would have liked to have fun lighting in pinks, blues, purples, etc. during the late hours of the night.

Advice…

Have some champagne while you and your girls are getting dressed the day of.

Eat, Dance and be with your Husband.  I wanted to enjoy my wedding.  I didn’t want to feel like I had to go to each table or person to thank them so, instead, we had a greeting line and we also said a few words at the church and at the reception to thank everyone for sharing this special day with us.

Robb and I left every night together.  We planned on getting to bed every night of the wedding weekend by 10:30 or 11, we didn’t want to be too tired to enjoy the following day.  Also, we sipped our drinks; the last thing we wanted was to be hung over during such a special time.

Shoes.  If you are trying to decide whether or not to spend money on shoes, do!  I was wondering the same thing myself, but one of my recently married friends mentioned to me that the more expensive shoes, particularly Jimmy Choo, are much more comfortable.  It’s true!  I can’t do heals for very long!  I get blisters and the balls of my feel kill every time!  But, I spent the money and bought them.  Wow!  I was in them from 4 to 11pm!  I couldn’t believe it.  I was dancing and everything!  Now I know why they are so expensive!

Trianna_Robb_dancing

Trianna’s most important piece of advice:

Once the wedding day or weekend begins, let go!  Let it all go, all your planning and worries, and know that the most important thing is your groom.  After all, you are here because of him.  Be present and enjoy every second of every moment.  Don’t focus on what is wrong, just focus on the happiness and love that surrounds you.  Enjoy the moment: eat, drink, dance and be present with your husband, family and friends!  I can’t stress that enough!

Bridesmaids Gifts:

For the bridesmaids, I had a luncheon the day of the wedding at the Watermark restaurant located in the Watermark Hotel.  I gave everyone a little something.

Moms: I gave them each framed photos of when they saw me in my dress for the first time.  In each frame I had 2 photos.  1) photo of me in my dress and my mom or me in my dress and my mother in law and  2) all three of us together

Robb had the same idea for the dads.  A great photo was taken at our engagement party of Robb, his dad, his brother, my dad and my brother.  He also framed it and gave it to the dads.

Trianna_Robb_dressing

Bridesmaids and Flower girls: I gave them each a necklace and earrings.  The necklaces were pearls with a gem pendant.  Each bridesmaid had a different gem on her necklace.  I looked up what each gem meant and paired the gem with the girl.  For example: Michelle and I grew up together and we were creative and imaginative together, the stone I gave her symbolized creativity.

Robb gave his boys tuxedo accessories, like the buttons and cufflinks.

Other Fun Stuff

We really wanted to incorporate the feel of San Antonio.  On the Thursday before the wedding weekend we already had guests come into town.  We all went to Mi Tierra, a delicious Mexican restaurant.  It was so much fun!  They had mariachis and beautiful Mexican style murals.

The Sunday after the wedding we were given a brunch at Casa Rio.  It sits right on the Riverwalk and was such a perfect place.

Girls get all the attention when it comes to weddings.  My dad and my brother saw that my mom, my sister and I were attending so many showers and they wanted to have some fun too.  They decided to throw a gun shower for Robb.  They had so much fun!

Top Father Daughter Songs for a Quince

Monday, November 30th, 2009

by:  Candice Lapin, Founder

Every minute detail of your quince is meticulously planned out. Don’t consider skimping on the music that will be played at the reception, or as background music for an intimate dinner.

Choosing the right songs can hold meaning throughout the big day. Hearing that song on the radio or in a movie will evoke the feelings you shared that special night.

Quince Songs Your Dad Will Like:

1.   De Nina a Mujer by Julio Iglesias

Ok. So it may be a little old school but Dad will really love it unless your dad of course is not really the old fashion type.  This song is definitely old fashion and definitely from another time so good to keep on the list for Daddy Daughter Quince Songs. Check.

2.   Quinceanera by Thalia

This song definitely has a bit of an old school feel as well. But, if you are looking for a song to really pull at the strings of the crowd then go for it!

3.   Tus Quince Anos by Banda Arkangel

Again, this is not quite a Daddy Daughter Quince Song but it is sure to get the crowd fired up and calling out from the crowd – or at least that is what my cousins would probably do.  A little more upbeat and not such a slow song with Dad.

4.   Quiquitita by ABBA

I loved this one when I heard it.  A little bit silly but so good if you are looking for something a little different.

Some new more comtemporary options:

4.   Quinceanera by Omi y Veterano

Ok if your Dad is a bit young and looking to rock out then this may be more his speed. No slow dance just pure fun!

5.   My Baby You by Marc Anthony

Ok. well maybe this isn’t soooo contemporary but you need options for Dad right?

Our Top Wedding Do’s and Don’ts

Monday, November 30th, 2009

By: Kelly Oshiro, Wedding Planning Expert

Hello Para ti Novia readers! My name is Kelly Oshiro and I am an event designer and wedding planner based in Santa Barbara.

Today I thought I would share my top wedding do’s and don’ts to keep in mind during the wedding planning process.

Top Wedding Does:

Do create a complete and accurate guest list before you start looking for a venue. You don’t want to book a venue, realize it’s to small for your count and have to cut down on your guest list.

Do set a realistic wedding budget beforehand. Weddings are expensive—if you have a small budget don’t invite 300 people. Typically weddings run at least $100/per person and this cost doesn’t include your dress or location.

Do plan on booking your wedding venue / location a year out. You’ll have your pick of a variety of locations and you may even get your ideal date.

Do get a wedding planner, at the least a “day of” coordinator (though “month of” is a more accurate term). You don’t want your mom chasing down the bridal party for photos instead of seeing you put on your wedding dress.

Do pick your battles with family members. If flowers, cake, whatever, isn’t that important to you, let it go. Everyone will have an opinion on something. Fight for what’s important to you and don’t stress about the small stuff.

Do take a honeymoon. I know with the economy being with the way it is a lot of couples are pushing they’re honeymoon for a later date. Even if you can’t go on a big trip, take at least a few days at a nice bed and breakfast to enjoy some time alone, eat well, and sleep in.

Do take a step back a gigantic wedding step back. With all the details in planning your wedding, it can be easy to get absorbed in the microscopic details. Never forget the big picture—that this day is about sharing the love you’ve found with your mate and celebrating it with your family and friends. It’s really not about a certain shade of peach.

Do plan for your guests. As much as this day is about you two, there about 100+ people there that need to be taken care of. Signage, welcome drinks (doesn’t need to be alcoholic), ample heaters for an outdoor wedding, starting the ceremony relatively on time, delicious, hot food are the things that matter to your guests. They won’t notice the flowers per say, but they will notice if the servers never filled their wine glass, if they’re freezing (they will go home early) and if they have to wait around for a hour for the ceremony to start on a hot day.

Do pick your music at least a month before the wedding. Finding the right song for the processional/recession, first dance, parent dances etc, takes time. Provide a clear list to the DJ/band. If you need help ask them, they do weddings all the time and they might have the perfect song for your first dance.

Top Wedding Don’ts:

Don’t forget your groom. He has opinions and this is his wedding too. Somehow I don’t think he envisioned wearing a pink polka dot bow tie for his wedding day. Respect his ideas. The wedding should be about the couple, not just the bride.

Don’t take a brigade of people with you when you try on wedding dresses. They’re opinions will confuse you and cause you much more stress (you know what looks best on you and what feels best). If anything, I suggest going at least 2 times to look at dresses by yourself. After you’ve figured out the style your looking for or have a couple of strong contenders bring your mom or your maid of honor to make the final decision.

Don’t wait until the last minute to do the seating chart. It will take you a lot longer than you think.

Don’t attempt to do your flowers. It’s a project that has to be done right before your wedding and flowers are finicky. It will also take you way longer than you think.

Don’t incorporate a tradition just because its “tradition.” If you don’t like cake, and don’t like the wedding cake sentiment, skip it. I’ve done sundae cuttings, peach cobbler cuttings or no cutting at all. It’s your wedding, don’t be pushed into doing anything that doesn’t resonate with you and your fiancé.

Do-It-Yourself Fabric and Ribbon Covered Vases

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

By: Candice Lapin

If you are looking to save on your containers, consider simple inexpensive glass.  Often the best way to create a lot of drama on a dime is to cover the glass in fabric to bring in your color of choice.  Speak to your florist about whether they are willing to cover existing vases in a fabric or even a ribbon of your choice. Of course, you can always call in the family and friends for a do-it-yourself wedding project.

If you are a do-it-yourself type of bride, here are some simple steps to amp up your wedding vases:

What you will need to complete the project:

You will need a glue gun, a simple glass container and shantung silk or similar fabric/ribbon.

Step 1: Select a Simple Container

Square containers are often the simplest to cover.  Start the research by heading down to your local flower mart.  Often local vendors will have a selection of containers to help.  Or you may want to research the internet for discount glass vendors to find your vases online for less.

Step 2: Source Quality Fabric

Remember, good fabric and ribbon doesn’t mean high prices.  You can often find silks and rich fabrics for less than $2 or $1 a yard.  Depending on the size of your container you will be able to wrap at least two to four containers in a yard of fabric. With ribbon, you will likely need about a yard and a half for a 4 x 4 square container.

Step 3: Measure out your Fabric

Take your fabric or ribbon and begin to measure how much you will need against the fabric. Cut one long strip for the bottom (you will want this to be long so you can glue it to the sides of the container). Cut another strip for the length of the container. Cut to size.

Step 4: Glue the Fabric

For fabric covering, take the existing fabric and lay it under the vase.  Glue the bottom strip to the bottom of the vase.  Then take the ends of the fabric and glue them to the sides of the container. Then take you second strip and glue this to each face of the square container.

For a more simple approach, tie a wide ribbon around the sides of the container. Lightly glue a small portion so that the ribbon stays in place.

4 Winter Wedding Cocktail Ideas to Consider

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

All too often the weather outside a winter wedding can be…let’s face it very cold and sometimes dreary. A great way to brighten up the ambiance and mood of your reception is by serving your guests fun winter wedding cocktails, especially signature wedding cocktails that you have invented DIY style.

You can bring your winter wedding reception to life with rich and warm or vibrantly colorful cocktail treats.

Toasted Almond Shot

When guests arrive, have them greeted with a shot of warmth. The Toasted Almond is a sweet rich splash of goodness to start the wedding off right.

What you will need:

1/2oz amaretto almond liquor
1/2oz Kahlua coffee liquor
1/2oz light cream

Shake and serve in a double shot glass.

To convert this concoction to a drink instead of shot, combine

2oz amaretto almond liquor
2oz Kahlua coffee liquor
2oz light cream

Shake and serve into a highball glass.

Apple Cider Punch

Not all winter wedding drinks need contain alcohol. This punch is great for adults and children alike looking to get a warm feeling.

3 red apples
2 cups hulled strawberries
4 chopped mint sprigs
4 cups apple juice
7 cups apple cider
3 cups lemonade

Ingredients should be chilled. Cut apples into cubes and combine the mint and fruit with the apple juice in large punch bowl and mix. Cover and refrigerate until serving. When ready to be served add apple cider and lemonade. To spike this delicious blend, top it off with a splash of Tuaca, an Italian liquor.

Poinsettia

This is a vibrantly colorful champagne cocktail drink has an adorable winter flower name.

1 tbsp Grand Marnier® orange liqueur
1 part cranberry juice
1 part Champagne

Mix the champagne and cranberry juice, and then float the Grand Marnier on top. Serve in a champagne flute and garnish with a small orange slice.

Dreamy Winter Delight

This blend makes for a delicious desert accompaniment and a fun alternative to Irish coffee which people love to gravitate to in the winter…right?  This is a great winter drink that will say more warm winter wedding than winter.

2 oz Irish cream
6 oz hot chocolate
Amaretto almond liqueur

1 can whip cream

Pour Irish cream into a coffee mug or heatproof cup with hot chocolate. Add amaretto to taste, stir and top off with a small squirt of whip cream.

Now for the fun part.  It is time to take your hubby-to-be and start trying some of these concoctions out with one another. This is where you both get try these fabulous drinks to see what works for you.  Maybe even this weekend.  Why not?

Find the Right Dress for your Spring/Summer Wedding

Friday, November 27th, 2009

As we head into fall, plenty of brides are feeling the last bits of summer and getting ready to begin the Spring planning. So, when it comes to keeping your cool during a warmer weather wedding, nothing is more important than picking the perfect dress. So just what makes the ideal spring/summer frock? Why, a flattering shape, the perfect fabric blend, and a healthy dose of attitude, of course!

Spring and Summer brides are already at an advantage in the clothing department, as over 70% of wedding dresses are of the strapless or spaghetti strap variety. But sleeve length aside, the real trick to choosing the right dress for a June bride lies in material selection. No need to feel like you’re melting under a mountain of taffeta- light weight fabrics are all the rage for this year’s summer dresses. Think organdy, georgette, cotton eyelet, chiffon or linen.

Tea length wedding dresses are another great idea for hot weather nuptials. Not only will a shorter hemline help keep you cooler, it can be a great way to look your best at a beachside ceremony or country reception. (Big billowy skirts and long trains have a nasty habit of collecting sand and grass stains before the “I Do’s” have even been said)

If you’re planning a nontraditional wedding ceremony, you might want to consider a less than traditional dress, as well. For a casual affair, why not look into a slip dress or summery sheath? Color is also very popular this season, and adding a little to your dress can help keep your entire look fresh and new. (A little can go a long way; think accents of blue, green or lavender. Or, for a sunset ceremony that everyone is sure to remember, dare to be bold in strapless off white number with a deep red sash. Paired with a calla lily and red rose bouquet, you will be sure to turn more than a few heads) Looking for something with a more elegant twist? A column dress with eyelet details can be the perfect blend of summer fun and formality.

Spring and Summer weddings encompass the best of the season- warmth, sunshine, and a hint of nostalgia. With the right dress, you can be sure to shine as brightly as any summer star.

Luna de Miel Con Ritmo y Con Calma: Argentina

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Rae Cosmetics provides enough coverage while still being light and natural looking! I don’t leave home without it.”

- Monica Brant (IFBB Fitness Olympia Champion)

“She’s great! She takes off years – and pounds!”

- Liz Carpenter (Press Secretary for Lady Bird Johnson)

“I thoroughly enjoyed working with Rochelle. I felt that her makeup made me look better than myself but still like ME, natural looking and yet still glamorous. I felt more confident than I normally do in a photo shoot. She assured me that she would never use red lipstick on me in any other situation! (The “Go Red for Austin” campaign for the American Heart Association had a theme!)”

Registro de Regalos: Que Tus Invitados No Se Agobien por Las Compras

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Bed Bath and Beyond

Real Wedding: Trianna & Robb in San Antonio, TX

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Ok ladies, here is another amazing real wedding from San Antonio.  But there were so many incredible shots of this wedding that we will be creating two separate posts…so you will have to wait until next Monday for the rest!

Here is the story of how they met!Brdail Details 2

Photography Courtesy of Marcus Revilla Photography

Trianna: Robb and I met our senior year of college.  We both went to Middlebury College, a small liberal arts college in Vermont. Once we met, we were inseparable.  All of our friends called us Trobbie because where you found one, you found the other.

We knew we would marry after just a month of knowing one another, but we had our own time schedule and we were in no rush.  We dated for 6 years before he proposed, we were right on schedule.

After college, we moved to NYC where we lived for 5 years.  He proposed in Vermont on March 20, 2005.  We went snowshoeing on the Robert Frost trail.  It was a beautiful crisp winter day.  He led me off the trail and into a beautiful wooded area.  He got down on one knee and because the snow was so deep he almost fell.  All he could think was “Don’t drop the ring, we’ll never find it in the snow”.  I was so surprised; all I could say was “of course”.

The Color Palette

As an interior designer, I knew I had to find a concept, a theme.  Our theme was the wreath.  Having a theme was helpful, everything from the décor of the room to the stationary flowed.  I had an idea of what I wanted and drew the wreath myself.  I still have the original drawing on trace; everything on my stationary was taken from that drawing.  It is so special.

Also, being an interior designer, I love color.  I couldn’t choose one, it was too hard!  I ended up with mostly creams and a splash of fig.  The dark color worked well with the black tie attire.

The Ceremony

I had always known that I wanted the wedding in Texas.  It became clear after we found out that Robb’s uncle Vosko who’s a designer and the priest who would be residing over our ceremony renovated the San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas.  San Fernando was the same church my grandmother got married in.  Originally, the cathedral was very small and intimate.

The original area is ornate, full of gold leaf and beautiful light, but over the years it had been expanded.  We wanted to find a way to get married in the old original cathedral.  We asked Robb’s uncle, Father Vosko and his Aunt Janet, a nun, to help us with the ceremony; we wanted it to be completely ours.  We did get married in the old cathedral.  We were surrounded by all our guests; it was the most amazing feeling having all our loved ones surround us rather look up at us on stage.

Both parents walked Robb and I down the aisle and gave us away.  It was so much fun having all 6 of us up there hugging and kissing each other.

The Ceremony Music

I wanted something different as I walked down the aisle so I chose Laudate Dominum by W.A. Mozart. It is absolutely beautiful.

We had six strings, choir of 8 and an organist.  I didn’t want to skimp on music because to me more than flowers and decor, music is what makes the ceremony heartfelt.  We didn’t do too much with flowers or décor for the church.

Involving the Family

We included as many people as possible.  Having everyone involved was important to us.

We had all our aunts and uncles not involved in the ceremony do the ushering

We had 8 cousins say the prayers of the faithful (4 from his side and 4 from mine)

we had his closest aunt and uncle do the arras and my closest aunt and uncle do the lasso

We had his cousin and my cousin as flower girls

We had the rest of the 8 cousins bring up the gifts

We had 2 of our college friends say a reading in English and we had my 2 godmothers each say something in Spanish.

Incorporating Cultural Traditions

We did some of the Mexican traditions such as the lasso and the arras.  We also had the Ave Maria (sung by my cousin who has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard) as we carried roses to the Virgin.

My Aunt Toni has always wanted to do the lasso, she is amazing.  She went to a jeweler and had the lasso custom made out of pale pink pearls (my dress was actually a very pale pink, so pale that no one probably noticed), silver and crystals.  I can now take the lasso apart and wear it as jewelry. Each of the parts that went around Robb and me are now long string pearls, the other two parts are a shorter necklace and a bracelet.  The cross is a pendant that can be used on any necklace.  I have worn the pearls so many times!

At the end of the ceremony, Vosko, the priest, had all 4 parents come up to the altar, stand around Robb and me and each say a prayer for us.  It was so special.

I wasn’t expecting the ceremony to be my favorite part, but because of Uncle Vosko and Aunt Janet, it was my favorite part by far.

Quinceanera Do’s & Don’ts

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Hello Para ti Novia readers! We took some of the amazing Kelly Oshiro top tips for brides and found some incredible do’s and don’ts to help you start planning your incredible quince!

Do:

Create a complete and accurate guest list before you start looking for a venue. You don’t want to book a venue, realize it’s to small for your count and have to cut down on your guest list.

Do set a realistic budget beforehand. Quinces are expensive—if you have a small budget don’t invite 300 people. Typically weddings run at least $100/per person and up and this cost doesn’t include your dress or location. So for a quince, think about $50 per person or more depending on the location you are including.  The more casual your location, the more inexpensive it will be.  If that is well over your budget, start speaking with the family about holding it at someone’s house and getting it catered!

Do plan on booking your location a year out. You’ll have your pick of a variety of locations and you may even get your ideal date.

Do get an event planner, at the least a “day of” coordinator (though “month of” is a more accurate term). You don’t want your mom chasing down your friends and family for photos instead of seeing you put on your quincenera dress.

Do pick your battles with family members. If flowers, cake, whatever, isn’t that important to you, let it go. Everyone will have an opinion on something. Fight for what’s important to you and don’t stress about the small stuff.

Do take a step back. With all the details in planning, it can be easy to get absorbed in the microscopic details. Never forget the big picture—that this your special day.  You’re fifteen!! Finally, Mami was right, it does happen fast. Have fun and celebrate this incredible day with your friends.

If you need help ask them, they do weddings and parties and quinces all the time and they might have the perfect song for your first dance.

Don’t:

Don’t take a brigade of people with you when you try on quince dresses. Too many opinions by too many friends will just confuse you and cause too much stress (you know what looks best on you and what feels best).

Take one or two friends with you and start looking at prices and stores that work for your budget. If anything, I suggest going at least 2 times to look at dresses by yourself. After you’ve figured out the style your looking for or have a couple of strong contenders bring your mom to make the final decision.

Don’t wait until the last minute to do the seating chart. It will take you a lot longer than you think.

¡No puedo invitarlos a todos! ¿Qué hago?

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Dale a tú boda esa apariencia antigua

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Top Reasons to Hire a Wedding Videographer | Wedding Videography

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

By: Isabel Gonzalez, Expert, Videographer, IsabelGonzalez.com

I remember my mom showing me old Super 8 films on a clunky old projector off of our living room wall as a child. I remember staring at the little figures that were being projected on the wall. I could make out my mother as a young person … my grandfather – with hair! Wow. How special to see what they were like back in the day. How I wanted to jump into the picture to experience even more of what it might have been like for them, what they must have felt.

I also remember that the projector had to be handled just the right way otherwise the film might melt due to a hot bulb or snap in half due to a small tear in the film. I knew then how important that film was. It was my glimpse into my family’s life. I glimpse I could have seen no other way.

Fast-forward several years.

I stand in a church as a bride and groom say their vows as I watch them thru the viewfinder of my camera. This time I’m the one creating the images that will be experienced by this couple’s family, future children, grandchildren, etc. Maybe no longer projected on a wall, maybe now on a 42-inch flatscreen. Old switches now replaced by remotes.

What draws us in has less to do with the technology used but everything to do with the story. The medium has changed, the emotions haven’t.

Not everyone considers wedding video a necessity for his or her wedding. Whether it is because they remember cheesy star-wiped wedding videos from the 80’s or because the budget just doesn’t allow for it. All valid. People may have a dozen reasons why they shouldn’t have a video but sometimes they fail to remember why they should…

… to hear the emotion in your spouse’s voice as he or she utters their vows to you

… a grandparent smiling at you and your new spouse as you begin your new life together

… your parents’ heartfelt toast telling you how they’ve never been prouder

All these moments plus many, many others come together to create a story that is uniquely, sublimely yours. Your story is not a solitary moment in time but many moments weaved together to unite the all the amazing sights, sounds and emotions of the day.

An experienced wedding videographer knows how to capture these moments, knows how to piece them all together to evoke an emotion. Aside from the obvious benefits of hiring an expert – professional equipment, experienced eye, dedicated shooter, editing skills – a wedding video has the magical ability to make those ethereal moments tangible all over again.

As I watched those old Super 8’s, I poked fun at my mom’s high-teased hair, all the time thinking how beautiful she was. I don’t know if your children will tease you about anything but I can guarantee they will see their parent’s beauty and the love they share in the video that captured it all.

Today’s videographer goes by many titles … filmmaker, storyteller, visual artist. Whatever you want to call them, they all have their own unique way of telling your story.

Shape Up: Ideas to get in Shape for Your Wedding

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

By: Nora Zelevansky

Brides spend hours considering options like invitation design, floral schemes and hairstyles (Up do? Down do? What to do?).  Often, the quest for the perfect gown consumes soon-to-be-married ladies most of all.  Still, what good is the world’s most beautiful dress, if you spend your wedding day hating your un-toned arms or slightly protruding belly?

Even the most modest bride wants to feel fabulous on her wedding day.  Fortunately, there are several ways (in various price ranges) to get into shape for the big day.

Private Training

If you’re someone who benefits from one-on-one attention, Mike Donavanik is your man.  His Bridal Boot Camp training will have you in shape in no time, using an individually customized holistic approach involving nutrition, consistent training and at-home assignments (from remembering your posture each time the phone rings to exercising 30 to 45-minutes on off days).  With Mike on-hand encouraging you during targeted exercises, you’ll automatically tone up and rise to your potential.

Group Boot Camp Training

Targeted workouts happen in group forums too.  At Doug Rice’s Boot Camp 90210, women (often brides) sign up for at least 10 training sessions 2 to 3 times a week for 3 to five months.  The workouts are specifically designed for the female body, often moving outdoors for athletic drills, obstacle courses and sculpting exercises.  So, if you like getting out of the gym, this may be the ideal tactic for you!

Classes

Signing up for a package of classes can be less expensive and less pressured. The Bar Method (a combination of pilates, yoga and ballet) offers a quicker, less expensive and more varied workout.  These 45-minute classes are meant to firm muscles, reduce fat, improve posture, lift your butt, tone your abdominals and also heighten your energy level. Or try their videos for an at home option. Sounds like the perfect recipe for wedding day bliss.

The Budget Bride: Top Tips to Cut Down on Wedding Photography Fees

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Each week we try to bring you a new idea for how to save money on your big day. This week we wanted to share our tips on what you can do to save on photography:

1.      Inquire as to Photography Packages

Most photographers and wedding professionals generally offer various levels of pricing.  For example, some photographers tier their photography by hours that they shoot the wedding event.  The first thing any bride should do is discuss rates with their photographer.  Find out if there is a package that works for your budget.  Or, are there elements that can be created al la carte.  Many photographers are willing to work with their brides to come up with a pricing package that is perfectly suited to a bride’s budgetary needs.  All you need to do is…ask.

2.      Create your own wedding album

Photography packages may or may not include a wedding album.  You may want to ask your photographer if the package you are deciding upon includes the album.  If you are looking to adjust pricing with your photographer, you may want to ask if you can create the photo album on your own so that you can still get the photographer you have been dreaming of!

Of course, if you do end up creating an album with your hubby, there are a number of photography companies that allow you to create albums. Websites like Shutterfly even have specials and extra deals so you can save on the creation of your wedding album.

3.  Hire an assistant wedding photographer

Many photographers have a slew of assistants on staff that tend to moonlight as wedding photographers themselves. Ask around. See if there are any assistant photographers willing to help you and your soon-to-be esposo!

Or, you may want to try a seasoned photography student. There are often amazing talents at the local art schools in your area. \

4.  Get your guests to take pictures

Guests can help you fill in any gaps of table side activity. Many brides hire a photographers to come for the ceremony and a set number of hours to the wedding. A great way to get coverage on the event afterhours and any specific tableside fun is to put cameras on tables and encourage guests to snap their favorite pics. You never know if you have a secret Annie Lebowitz on your hands.

Remember, the trick to planning on a budget is not about skimping on style but simply taking the time to be more resourceful

Find the Coolest Gown for Your Quince {and Your Budget} | Quinceanera

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

By: Catalina Walsh

One of the coolest parts of planning your quinceaneara is finding that perfect dress. You know you have been thinking about it for months if not the last couple of years!! But, when it comes time to finally buy that dress of our suenos, we all have to face the fact that the most exclusive designs tend to be the most expensive ones {and well out of our budget}.  So, what can you do to ensure you have the perfect quince dress without breaking the bank or your parent’s budget.

Girls celebrating their quincearea in the United States spend an average of fifteen hundred dollars or more on their gown. And if you want it made of silk, with handmade embroidery and especially designed for you, you might end up spending up to five grand. During these times not all of us can afford to spend that kind of cash on a dress, which is why we’ve gathered some ideas to help you find the ideal dress {at the right price} without sacrificing one bit of style.

Buy your gown on sale

Do what ever bride does – what for sales! If you are looking for the traditional quinceanera dress, every bridal store has a yearly or twice yearly sale.  All you have to do is call and ask when it is. Find out when your favorite boutique has its sale and prepare yourself.

The day of the event be sure to arrive very early since there will be many other brides to be waiting in line hours before the store opens. Many brides and even girls celebrating their quince show up wearing a bathing suit under their clothing so they can try on the dresses outside the fitting rooms. However, we highly recommend that you go to the boutique a few days before the big sale so you can find and try on your favorite dresses ahead of time.

Go Vintage

The celebrities all go vintage, so why shouldn’t you! Start asking your mom or your older sister’s friends about the good vintage stores in your town.  Better yet, head online to ebay or etsy to find a dress that could work for your quince. With vintage gowns, prices can vary dramatically.  The best one’s tend to be expensive so don’t let that word vintage let you think the dresses are all deals. Some of the dresses are in mint condition. However, if you find the right stores, you can sometimes find a designer dress from the eighties (retro anyone?) or nineties that is amazing.

If you choose to go vintage be sure to try on the gown before purchasing sizes can vary.  You may have to make some minor repairs as well since the older the fabric is, the more delicate it can become.

Consider Renting your Dress

For years men have rented their tux while we end up spending fortunes on our gown. Nowadays there are places that specialize on wedding gown rentals from top designers for anywhere between a hundred and a thousand dollars. The only disadvantage is that you can’t keep it, but if that’s not important to you this may be a very good option.

Design your gown

Another great way to obtain the ideal dress for less is to head to a local dress designer and design it yourself. You don’t have to be an expert in fashion design. Start by looking around at fashion blogs and websites for inspiration. Then start collecting the various dresses that inspire you. Then print those pages out and take them to a local designer who can work with you to create a unified look. {You can even get creative and use the sleeves of one with the train of another}. Remember, by saving on the making of the dress, you can afford to splurge on some pretty sweet fabrics.

So what are you waiting for? Its time to find that dress girls!

Wedding Dress Shopping Tip: Buy the Sample Dress

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Another incredible way to save a fortune on the wedding dress is to consider buying the “sample” off the rack. Samples are the dresses you try on in the bridal salon.

When buying the sample dress, remember that you may have to fix the edges or lace if there is wear and tear.  However, many stores are willing to offer deep discounts on samples because of the wear so be prepared to negotiate.  Check with your favorite bridal stores about when they offer sample sales.

Refreshing Hydrangea for Your Wedding Flowers

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Hydrangeas are beautiful additions to any floral design and fit within most color palettes. These blooms are large, full, and available year round. But wait! A word (actually a few) to the wise…

Hydrangeas need water, and lots of it! The stems are woody and drink quickly, so be certain to keep them hydrated at all times. In warm weather, these blooms may especially start to wilt. Here is a quick tip to refresh your hydrangeas:

Take a stem and flip it upside down in a bucket of fresh water to submerge the head of the flower for about five to ten minutes. The blooms will re-hydrate and come back to life, so they are ready for their close-ups on the big day!

Wedding Color Inspiration Board 4: Navy & Red

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Want to create drama in vibrant color?  Here are some inspired photos from Ellice Schwartz to help you bring elegant touches in colors like navy, purple and deep red.

Decor

A tablesetting is a principal way to introduce pops of color in unique ways.  Instead of using red napkins, use plum glass wine goblets.

Lighting

A simple way to bring in lighting for an evening wedding is to use votives and candles sprinkled throughout the venue. Also, ask the venue coordinator about ways to soften the overhead lighting so you can create an intimate romantic mood.

How To: Writing Your Own Wedding Vows

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Creating your own wedding vows can seem pretty daunting. So just where do you start? Here are some quick tips to help get you motivated and inspired!

Get Back to Basics

Think about why you have decided to get married in the first place. Reflection is great way to add memories to your vows. Your bride or groom will appreciate the sentiment that is expressed when you recount different special memories from your relationship.

Let Your Location Inspire You

Try to write your vows in a place that has significance to you and your fiancée. This will put you in the mood to write your vows. You can go and sit at the restaurant where you first met or proposed, or go for a nice walk on the beach or in your area.

Think Out Loud

It may sound silly but talk aloud about your wedding vows before you start writing them. Many people have a hard time writing their wedding vows because they want to write a master piece. However, if you just start the whole process by saying out loud how you feel then you will be able to have ideas to work off of. Then, you can record your thoughts or start writing them right after you finish verbalizing your ideas.

Talk to friends and family

The fourth tip is to have family members and friends ask you about how you feel about your fiancée. This will allow you to really search deep within yourself to try to convey to others how you feel about the person that you are going to marry. When you recite your vows at the altar, other people will hear what you have to say in your vows so this helps the process go more smoothly.

Give Yourself Plenty of Time

Write your vows over an extended period of time. Do not rush writing your wedding vows because you will only get frustrated if you get writer’s block. Take at least two weeks to compile a few drafts to finalize your wedding vows.

Writing your wedding vows can be very difficult but it is important to write memorable vows that allow you to express your love and appreciation for your fiancée. The hard work and effort will pay off when you have a memorable wedding day.

Llegando en Estilo: Ideas Para Transportación Divertidas

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Location, Location, Location: Top Budget Friendly Venue Ideas

Friday, November 20th, 2009

By: Candice Lapin

The venue always seems to be the biggest hurdle in planning any event (finding the right look and feel of a place alone can send some brides into early onset bridezilla-mode). Then add catering costs to the mix and couples start wondering if they should consider eloping. But, the challenge of finding a venue to fit your budget should be part of the fun; or, at least it can be if you are prepared in advance for all the venue options at your fingertips.  With that in mind, we have compiled our list of budget friendly alternatives to help you find the perfect venue.

Consider throwing a Backyard Wedding.

Keep costs to a minimum by “staying in.” Talk to relatives or family friends about which house and backyard would work best. If you already had planned on an intimate backyard bash, start mapping out how many tables will comfortably fit so you can determine your guest list. With location checked off the list, you can start negotiating with your mother and in laws on which lucky people stay on the guest list.

Thow your wedding on a Friday or Sunday

So many locations are willing to work with you if you opt to throw your wedding on a Friday or Sunday.  Ask the venue what the rate is for a Saturday wedding, then inquire for their Friday or Saturday rates. You will be surprised how much more you can get for your money by being flexible.

Throw your party earlier in the Day.

Reduce the costs of your venue just by throwing your event earlier in the day. Many locations will reduce fees simply because daytime weddings do not cut into their peak hours. Weddings that continue into the late afternoon also get the added bonus of dusk lighting that can be very romantic for your ‘ride’ off into the sunset as husband and wife.

Consider your Favorite Park.

Check with your favorite park or look for private gardens, many allow events to be rented for nominal fees. Plus, day weddings set in lush parks have great natural warmth. It will give your day that garden feel without the giant price tag.

Look for Recently Opened Locations or Venues.

Venues that are set to open or have recently opened are looking for business, especially wedding business. As a new business, the venue manager may be more willing to negotiate on price. Ask friends or work colleagues or even go online to research new restaurants or event spaces in your favorite areas around town.

Ideas Para Recepciones Románticas en Los Angeles

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Hispanic Wedding Traditions: The Arras Coin Ceremony

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Are you looking to incorporate a bit of your own tradition or the grooms? If either you or your hubby-to-be are Hispanic, then you may have heard of the Arras Ceremony {the thirteen gold coins}. But, do you know how to incorporate it or what it stands for?

First a bit of a background.

A long-standing tradition in both Spain and Mexico, the Arras are thirteen gold coins that the groom gives to his bride. Although both cultures actually incorporate the gold coins a different points during and before the marriage.

Like the lassos tradition, the gold coins signify that the groom is placing his trust in his bride, and that their union is safe to do so. Romantico, no?

Spanish Tradition

If you are Spanish, typically, the groom will provide you with the coins before the ceremony. In some cases, the coins may be given to the bride in a beautiful box. You can decide how you want to incorporate the coins {whether it be a box, a tray or even a small velvety pouch}.

It is really up to you to bring you own special touch to the wedding day.

Mexican Tradition

In Mexico {as well as Panama}, the coins are actually incorporated into the church service. The priest blesses the coins and then gives the coins to the groom who then passes the coins to the bride. The passing of coins to the couple is done several times.

You can find Arras Coins for purchase by clicking here

Hispanic Wedding Traditions: The Mexican Lasso {El Lazo}

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Looking for a few Hispanic cultural elements to include in the ceremony, consider incorporating the Wedding Lasso.  The Hispanic wedding Lasso is a beautiful chain that looks a lot like a double rosary.  It is placed over the shoulders of the bride and groom.

Quick Tip:

Ropes and rosaries chains like the Wedding Lasso have been used for years in Hispanic cultures to signify tying the knot {ropes were used to actually tie a figure eight knot around the bride and groom}.

Technically, the Wedding Lasso has two loops.  One loop is placed over the groom and one loop is placed over the bride.  Often a godparent of the bride and groom is chosen to place the lasso over the groom and then the bride {the groom’s loop is done first).

Then the Wedding Lasso is left on the couple during the course of the ceremony to signify their eternal bond and unity as a couple.  Once the service is over the godparents or priest typically removes the Lasso.

How to Pick the Perfect Wedding Song

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

A song that perfectly sums up your love story in 3 minutes, could there be a more difficult or daunting task?

With all the stress of the wedding planning, the last thing you want to worry about is the pressure of this song. A song that is somehow supposed to give the reception guests a broad strokes view of the beauty of your story. While for some brides, it can be a breeze {the first song you snuggled to, or the first song that you danced to…}.

For others of us, it can be more of a …well, struggle. Partially, it can be challenging because you have to negotiate your musical tastes with that of your adoring fiancé…wink, wink. He may be more concerned with the signature drink menu {let’s face it grooms tend to be much more concerned with things like food and the bar} and whether he likes the drink named after him.

So when it comes to picking that pefect song…what is a Latina bride like you to do?

Here are our three top tips for getting all the notes of your wedding right, including the song:

Think back to all those Pivotal Moments

Make a list of all you pivotal moments. Then think back to what was playing at the time. Your hubby to be may have no clue as to what might have been playing at the restaurant of your first date but you do! You might be surprised at what you remember. Memories are often accompanied by music because it is so often playing at restaurants, movies, and even the mall.

Choose from your favorite singers

Are you a Ray LaMontagne fan? Or are you more Mana? Whoever the singer or band might be…start looking around at your itunes library for those singers or songwriters that you or your hubby absolutely love. There may be more than just a few songs that seem perfectly romantic and suited to your love story.  Or if you don’t know where to start for a contemporary singer songwriter, head to pandora.com and type in different singers that you like and start listening.  This is your wedding, have a little fun with it!

{We happen to love that Alejandro Sanz song from 1997, Corazon partido? Super romantic, no?}

Choose from Old Standards

If you just can’t seem to come to a compromise on favorite new singers, what about some golden oldies? Are you and your hubby to be more Air Supply or Ella Fitzgerald? Often a super oldie is a great compromise because so many people associate these songs with childhood memories {you know, your parents or even abuelitos were probably playing it}. You can purchase CDs with Jazz or Contemporary Standards from local music stores or even amazon.com to start getting inspired.

It’s all about finding the right compromise in song choices to take your wedding from interesting to inspired!

Think you have a few song choices up your sleeve that you want to share with our brides….post them below in our comments section.

San Antonio Wedding Venues (That Won’t Break the Bank)

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

By: Veronika Lazabal

In the heart of Texas, San Antonio is one of the most picturesque cities in the South West… a big plus if you’re planning some romantic Lone Star nuptials. Novias on a budget will be glad to know that there are plenty of affordable options when it comes to San Antonio venues. And with gorgeous Spanish-Mediterranean architecture, plenty of lush gardens, and some stellar settings, just about every San Antonio bride can find the perfect setting for a memorable wedding day.

Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

For an Intimate Affair:

If you’re planning on keeping your guest list under 50, consider one of San Antonio’s many beautiful Bed and Breakfasts. Many of these charming inns will help you put together a completely elegant (and stress free) ceremony for much less than the price of a larger hotel. Plan your wedding in the off season for an even better rate, and you might even be able to negotiate a night’s stay for the happy couple.

Go Botanical

Among the city’s most beautiful settings, the San Antonio Botanical Gardens are a surprisingly affordable wedding venue. Not only are the rental fees low, but the spectacular scenery will help cut down on the need for decorations, as well.

Artsy

San Antonio is home to several great galleries and museums—why not get married at one of them? They make unexpected venues… and when else would you be able to celebrate your big day surrounded by priceless pieces of art?

Go on a “Mission”

While the National Park Service of San Antonio generally doesn’t issue permits for receptions on the grounds of the city’s four missions, each church does allow weddings. Take advantage of all that history by having your ceremony at the church and taking your wedding photos at the mission. Then you can move your reception to a smaller local hall… saving you money without sacrificing the wow factor.
