Boda Reales: Anna y Lonngrenn | Bodas Reales

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Consejo #1: Elige Sus Batallas

Consejo #2: ¡Si Lo Puedes Hacer Tú Misma… Hazlo!

Consejo #4: No te Conformes

Incorporating Fragrant Flowers into Your Wedding Decor

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

by: Jennifer Juhos, Expert, Fiore Designs

Whether you walk past a blooming hedge of jasmine, a vase full of Casablanca lilies, or a crate of dried lavender, fragrance matters!  A very natural spirit may be achieved by introducing fragrant flowers into your arrangements & design. The subtle essence of fragrance will put most people at ease.  Scent stirs up nostalgia and may take each of your guests on a different journey.

Just take care in incorporating too much fragrance.  Some guests may be allergic to fragrance, while too much scent can also overwhelm the food or menu selections at the wedding.

Some lovely fragrant flowers are:  Gardenias, freesia, lilac, lilies, stock, garden roses, peonies, lavender, & cymbidium orchids.  The orchid may come as a surprise, but some varieties of these blooms give off a peppery scent.

Take some time to stop and smell the roses… or lilac, or gardenias, or, well, you get the idea!

Wedding Inspiration Board 4: Green, Black & White

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Looking for that alternative color palette that will turn heads? Well look no further, this beautiful wedding set at the Viceroy has a color palette that says more urban sophisticate than day at the farm.

The Color Palette

This bride used black and white (click here to read on black and white) set against  crisp moss green to achieve her urban wedding chic look. Crisp stark colors like these set against each other create a stark contrast that really make the green pop.

Flowers

The bride turned to florist Jennifer Juhos of Fiore Designs to create the perfect blend of sweet and sophisticated. Although the bridal bouquet was all white, Jennifer turned the sweet flower baskets into green pops of fashionable color {that would make Carrie swoon} by pave’ing green mums.

Table Decor

The bride opted for starck contrasts on the tables as well with white plates, green cymbidium orchids and simple greenery.  We love that she chose simple candle lighting for the exterior evening dinner.

Escort Card Table

The bride then created wedding “newspapers” in the place of seating cards, that she did herself, to let her guests know where they would be dining.  She worked with Jennifer of Fiore Designs to integrate them into a grass planter.

Bridesmaids Dresses

The bride then introduced a fourth color by using charcoal gray for the bridesmaids dresses. We love the unexpected choice as it makes the dresses look less bridesmaids and more cocktail {and maybe just maybe these bridesmaids will be able to wear the dress again!}.

DIY: 3 Flower Arrangements for your Wedding

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Feeling crafty?  Why not try creating one or more of these easy and inexpensive flower centerpieces for your wedding celebration.  It will help access your floral mojo, and be kind to your budget!

1.  Floating Centerpice

You will need one to three glass vessels (depending on your table size, budget), a few large floral blooms in your favorite color, and some clean water.  Fill the vase(s) with water, cut the flower right below the head and place the bloom(s) in the vase so they float.  Some great blooms that float beautifully are peonies, dahlias, or even pin cushions.  Because you are only using a few blooms, find interesting flowers with texture and color to make a splash.

2.     Single variety flower centerpiece

You will need a container of your choice, and several stems of one type of flower.  You may need five to ten stems depending on the type of flower. {For tulips gather ten to twelve or even more if you want a bigger arrangement; for flowers like peonies you will need a lot less around five to eight} You will want to arrange the buds of the flowers so that they are all at the same height.  So, simply gather all of the flower stems together in your hands.  One you have arranged them at the same height, then tape or rubber band the stems using floral tape you can get at your local flower supply house. Then, cut the stems all at one length, and place them in the container.  Voila… instant arrangement!

While choosing a container, consider your theme.  For example, you may try a terracotta pot or decorative urn for a garden setting.  Or you might want a large set of mason jars for a more homespun look.  For an elegant affair, try clear glass in square shape or antique gold works.  In choosing your flower type, go for one or more colors.

3.     Planter Centerpiece

You will need a fresh green or blooming plant, a decorative container, and some garden moss.  Take the plant, and place it in the container of your choice.  Cover the exposed dirt with the garden moss and there you have it.  Don’t worry about removing the plant from its original container.  Keeping it contained will save on the mess and allow guests to re-plant and further enjoy the centerpiece in their own gardens!  You can create this simple and practical arrangement several days in advance.

Wedding Dress 101: Find the Right Silhouette for Your Body

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Not quite sure what dress will look best? Sick of combing through magazines in the hopes of finding that perfect dress with no clue as to which silhouette will make your body look like the goddess that you are?

Not to worry!  With the help of our experts, we will give you the 411 on which silhouettes will help to accentuate all the right curves and make you standout in all the right ways, of course….

Short Stature

Are you petite?  A little frame doesn’t have to be an obstacle if you know your way around the bridal shop.  A lines and drop waists will help elongate your frame.  Also, use lace.  According to Rose Gomez, of Rose Petals Bridal in Toluca Lake, CA, lace dresses on petite women have the effect of making you look longer and leaner.

Quick Tip: Remember ladies, you always want fabric to run vertically.  That means, according to Ms. Gomez, stick to gorgeous laces that run longways.  Something about the lace running vertically will trick the eye.

Pear Shapes

Pear shape ladies, that means girls with curves on the bottom, remember to look for dresses that are umpire.  It is all about accentuating your assets.  The high cinch under your bust will keep the eye focused above your waistline, and move them away from your hips.

Also, A-lines are a great go-to shape.  An A-line will cover the hips and typically cinches at the waist so that the eye is drawn to your thin waist.

Wide shoulders

For those of us with wide shoulders, it is key to play up your strengths and stay away from silhouettes that draw attention to your shoulders.  That means, stay far away from halter-tops.  You will want to look for trumpet and other drop waist shapes like the mermaid.

Hourglass

Are you a girl with curves in all the right places?  Well, you don’t want to hide those curves.  Show them off with a drop waist dress in either a mermaid, A-line or trumpet style wedding dress.

Quick Tip: If you are short with hourglass curves, opt for a drop waist A-line shape.

Full-figured

For those of us with full-figures, it is also key to remember that you want a dress that will hug at the waist and cinch you in to show off your curves. A-lines will help bring the eye in at the waist and mid-section through the full skirt.

Buxom or Large Chest

For those with larger chests, it is better to stay away from umpires and embrace a silhouette with more form-fitting cut to show off your shape.

Tall

Many tall women often look good in everything from an umpire waist to trumpet or mermaid looks.

Now ladies…all you need to do is find that perfect bridal boutique….

Real Wedding: Anna and Lonngrenn

Friday, July 24th, 2009

By: Veronika Lazabal

When Anna Cuellar met her Prince Charming, she had more to celebrate than just the fact that she was done dating frogs. Anna was about to do something that most of us dream about doing from the time we’re old enough to teeter around in our mom’s heels- plan her wedding. Being the good girl that she is, Anna was bound and determined to come in under the budget that had been set by her parents. (A feat that many said was impossible in the crazy land of excess that is Los Angeles). And being the good girls that we are, we tagged along-bringing Anna’s bottom line friendly ideas to savvy brides-to-be across the land.

Tip #1: Pick Your Battles

Deciding up front what is really important to you- and what you aren’t quite as passionate about- is the first step to trimming the excess fat from your wedding budget. For example, Anna knew that she wanted to have her wedding ceremony and reception at the Spanish Hills Country Club, in the lush hills of Camarillo California.

The exclusivity of her chosen location made it a bit more expensive than some of the other places she looked at, but Anna was more than willing to make up for that by altering her dinner menu. Spanish Hills has a fully customizable catering selection, making it easy for her to pair down the original menu until she was comfortable with both the food and the price.

Don’t be afraid to ask your caterers what they can do for you. If you’re unhappy with the food selection at your reception hall, look into an outside catering company for better prices. Just make sure you’re flexible where you can be- and stand firm where it matters most to you.

Tip #2: Be a Do It Yourself-er

Flabbergasted at the price of professionally printed invitations, Anna decided that she could come up with something just as creative on her own. Her brother, an amateur photographer, took a set of pictures of the happy couple, which Cuellar then took to a printing company in order to create completely personal (and oh so affordable) save the date cards.

For the actual invitation, our blushing bride nabbed her mom, and the two frugal divas set out in search of their own card stock and velum, which they then took to a local print shop. By providing the materials themselves, the ladies saved over 50% from the price they were originally quoted!

And, as long as Anna was in the do it yourself groove, she decided to take on her wedding favors, as well. Because she was having a winter wedding, Cuellar knew that she wanted to gift her guests with something that would convey warmth and snuggly feelings. A hunt of local shops turned up a company that was willing to give her a whopping discount on yummy soft pashmina wraps. Paying less than three bucks for each wrap meant that Anna had enough money left over to go back to the print shop and have a small message that matched her invites printed for each one.

Tip #3: Floor the Florist

Don’t think that you have to blindly accept the first quote that you’re given by a florist. Remember, my dears, this is your wedding, so don’t be bashful about rolling up your sleeves and getting into the nitty gritty details when it comes to your flower arrangements. By asking about alternative flower selections- still beautiful, and in keeping with her wedding colors-Anna was able to cut her total cost for all of the abundant flowers used in her wedding and reception to a reasonable four figure sum.

anna12

Tip #4: Momma was Right- You Better Shop Around

Unhappy with the first few wedding photographers she met with, Anna kept looking. That is, until she finally found a a talented photographer that not only gave her a great deal, but who treated her as though her wedding really mattered. Wedding photography is a service industry- if your photographer doesn’t get that, then it’s time to find someone who will. Make sure you work out the details of your package before the wedding- a photog is much more likely to make deals then than after the pictures have been developed. Anna’s selectiveness really paid off when she found Henry Chen, a local who gave her a great price on a fantastic picture package. Three photographers and 10 hours of memory making snapshots, an engagement session, a picture CD, and a guest book…for a great price.

anna11

Tip #5: She used a family Videographer

Not wanting skimp on a videographer but understanding she was close to reaching her budget, Anna tapped her brother (a former camera operator for the movie industry) to do her videography.   Anna saved a fortune by having her brother video tape a few key moments at the reception, and then skipping the long, drawn out professional video.

By using a few savvy wedding techniques, Anna Cuellar was able to have the wedding of her dreams- and come in under budget. By taking some of her ideas- and a few of your own creative cost cutting solutions- to heart, you can too.

A special thank you to Henry Chen for his beautiful photography of Anna Cuellar and her husband Lonngrenn.

Top Five Recession-Friendly Honeymoon Planning Tips 2009

Friday, July 24th, 2009

By: Paratinovia.com Staff Writer

Getting married is a whirlwind of to-do lists, excitement, and mind-blurring decisions. Planning the honeymoon destination amidst all of those life-changing and momentous decisions can almost seem like an afterthought.  Then, throw a strict budget into the mix and you may feel like you want to tear your hair out. But, it doesn’t have to be a challenge, here are our tips to help get you on the road to planning the trip of your dreams:

1.  Travel in the Off-Season

Consider planning your honeymoon for the off season. For some brides and grooms, this may mean postponing the honeymoon until the Fall or even Winter.  But, the bottom line is that if your wedding date falls on the ‘off season’ for tourism, you are more likely to get good rates on hotels and travel for your honeymoon destination. Then, for even more savings, make your reservations for hotel and car well in advance.

2.  Go the Boutique Hotel Route or even better, the Pensione

You don’t need to be a millionaire to travel to boutique hotels.  You just need to do your research. Finding amazing deals are just at your fingertips, as the internet is a great resource to begin the process of digging to find a beautiful boutique hotel where you can stay for about $80 to $150 per night.  Or, pensiones are a great lodging alternative to the boutique hotel.  Think Bed and Breakfast Inns.  Either choice make for an inexpensive alternative to a standard hotel; and, they are often cheaper.

3.  House Swap

The latest top honeymoon trend for anyone on a budget is to do a house swap. List your home and make your request for areas you want to go on your honeymoon. Make the arrangements to let the people who live in the honeymoon destination of your choice to come to where you live while you go there. You save on the expense of lodging which is one of the biggest expenses of any vacation and get to enjoy exotic locales for fractions of the cost.

4.  Bid on Your Honeymoon Travel

Websites like LuxuryLink.com and Priceline.com allow you to offer a price bid to be able to travel to an ideal location. You often times can make very low bids and get huge savings on beautiful hotels.

5. Go Camping in Romantic Locales

Can’t find someone to swap houses, or don’t feel comfortable letting strangers into your home? Then do the next best thing and really experience the honeymoon destination of your choice by enjoying all that the great outdoors has to offer and consider then next top honeymoon trend—camping. Snuggle close together on a moonlit night under the stars. You can’t get more romantic than that.

A few other cost saving options

Of course traditions are traditions for a reason and weddings bring to mind the traditional honeymoon ideas as well. Niagara Falls is still the top honeymoon destination in North America and it is not a budget breaker either. Other great low cost local honeymoon ideas are right in your own backyard like the beautiful Sonoma Valley, or the romantic Napa Valley. Hike, bike or camp out in the wonderful wine country or check out some of the local B&B’s for great deals.

A little planning and careful thought will get you that unforgettable honeymoon that will set the tone for happily ever after.

Días Calientes, Vestidos Ardientes

Friday, July 10th, 2009

HONEYMOON SPOTLIGHT: Brazil

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

By: Nora Zelevansky

If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain, then, well, basically you’ll love any tropical honeymoon you take. But, while lounging beachside at a fenced-in resort can be fantastic, more adventurous folks look south to Rio de Janeiro (particularly in the Zona Sul) for a great honeymoon destination. Here, the steamy heat, beach breeze, beautiful people and caipirinha cocktails create a uniquely sultry vibe.

HOTELS:

While Copacabana Beach may be second to Ipanema and Leblon, the famous Copacabana Palace is by far the grandest place to sip watermelon juice post-brunch by the pool (whether your name is Lola or not).

Beachfront and modern, head to Marina All Suites for an upscale boutique hotel vibe, apartment-style rooms and beautiful views.

Philippe Starck fans should head to Ipanema’s new marvel, Fasano, where the rooftop infinity pool with views of Sugar Loaf is a site to behold.

Ipanema Plaza offers a less pricey, low-key boutique hotel experience, where actual Brazilians stay.

For a more relaxed vibe, head to small scale Santa Teresa Hotel, known for their eco-Amazonian retreat, Le Spa.

RESTAURANTS:

For great cachaça (Brazilian rum), beer and cheap delicious eats from smoky black bean soup to lime soaked sausage, stop by Academia de Cachaca.

Break bread (or massive hearts of palm) amidst thatched huts atop a hill at Aprazivel.

Italian/Brazilan fusion makes for beautiful food and even more beautiful patrons at modern spot, Zuka: http://www.zuka.com.br/

Roberta Sudbrack is Rio’s answer to the celebrity chef.

NIGHTLIFE:

Pub crawl over to Devassa for some mellow lounging.

Blame it on the bossa nova at Vinicius Bar, a famous spot for live Brazilian music:

SHOPS:

Mallrats beware, shopping in Rio is largely shopping center-style and Leblon is the most high-end:

Maria Oiticica’s organic-style bijoux is made largely with natural pods and seeds, but evokes sophistication and edgy style.

The Hippie Market (Feira Hippie) in Ipanema is must-attend for crafts, jewelry and, of course, Havianas.

TRAVEL AGENCIES:

Honeymoon-specific travel agencies are great, but, if you use one, make sure you choose a company that truly knows Brazil and/or South America. Travel Store actually helps organize destination weddings too.

Altour represents all things travel: http://www.altour.com/

AR Tourism Brazil represents Brazilian travel specifically, though not solely honeymoons.

SAFETY:

Don’t bring bags to the beach and don’t rock that fancy jewelry at all if you can help it!

Bon Voyage!

TIP OF THE DAY: Recycle Your Wedding Flowers!

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

While planning the décor for your wedding, consider ways to re-use flowers throughout various areas of the venue and throughout the day.  Recycling flowers is a great way to keep your costs down.  When done right, your guests will never notice the switch!

For example, take flowers from your reception sit, then reuse and recycle them on tabletops at the reception site. Or take clusters from your ceremony canopy and scatter those flower clusters onto the tabletops at your reception.

Changing the presentation or location of certain arrangements will completely change the design aesthetic, and make for a seamless transformation.  You will really be getting two styles for the price of one!  For instance, fresh floral clusters will add an elegant flair to your ceremony chairs.  Once pulled away, the clusters may then serve as a beautiful addition to the your bridal party table, or a striking border for your cake table.

Collaborate with your florist and choose flowers that are long lasting to ensure freshness!

Trash the Dress: Have a Post-Wedding Photo Session

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

By: Candice Lapin

Looking forward to taking your bridal photos, but worried about how to keep your dress from getting dirty? It’s a common concern for brides who want to have a few more photos. Often, brides take photos a few days or even weeks before their ceremony to get those few shots in their gown before the flurry of the wedding (when key photos in the dress can get missed). Often, the biggest concern is not the photos, but the dress, or at least not ruining your dress before the big day.

So, how do you make sure you have all the right photos to commemorate your wedding, and of course the dress? In a Trash the Dress photo session, of course.

What is a Trash the Dress Photo Session?

Trash the Dress is a new trend in wedding photo sessions done after the big wedding day. A bride can schedule a separate photo session with the photographer for the bride or the bride and groom after the wedding. What is great about a Trash the Dress photo session is that you can literally shoot the photographs anywhere you want because you won’t have to worry about making sure not to “injure” the dress.

You can ride on a ferris wheel, run across the desert or even pose lying in the sand on the beach without worrying about scrapes, sand, water damage, or even a little dirt because the wedding day has already passed. The best part is that it gives brides the freedom to choose new places to take photographs without worrying what will happen to the dress. So, each bride can concentrate on getting all the frames and fun photos {that you didn’t get because you were so preoccupied on your wedding day}.

Can I still clean my dress?

Remember, for those of you who want to make sure that you can clean the dress, many dresses can still be salvaged depending on what type of photos you take. If salvaging your dress is important to you, then check with the manufacturer about clean-up.

Don’t hold back…

If you are a bride who loves drama or who wants to add a little more quirkiness to your memories, you may want to consider booking a “TTD” or Trash the Dress photo session with your photographer.

A big thank you to Chelsea Nicole for her fantastic Trash the Dress session.

Wedding Dress Shopping Tip: Consider Buying a Vintage Wedding Dress

Monday, July 6th, 2009

By: Catalina Walsh

Give your wedding a romantic touch by wearing a vintage wedding gown. Vintage wedding dresses are an unexpected way to find unique dresses that have incredible workmanship. Plus, you can guarantee that none of your friends will have anything like it.  Here are a few things to consider when you buy a vintage wedding dress.

Prices vary between two hundred and fifteen hundred dollars. If you choose to go vintage be sure to try on the wedding dress before purchasing it since sizes have changed throughout the years.

Your dress may also require repair.  We recommend that you avoid buying a gown that requires a lot of fixing, the older the fabric the more delicate it becomes, making repairs very expensive. For this very same reason, avoid buying a gown from before 1900 or that is made out of silk or chiffon.

Wedding Color Inspiration Board 2: Vintage Wedding Garden Party

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Not all of us want a hotel or restaurant wedding. So what’s a girl to do with a lot of cool ideas, a small budget and vintage state of mind? Throw a small vintage wedding garden party at a private home of course! Then make sure to keep the look and feel consistent by hiring a photographer to take those perfect off-beat photos.

When we were looking through Rachel Thurston’s amazing wedding photography, we stumbled across this indie garden wedding fete which managed to retain a small intimate feel.

The Color Palette:

The color palette for the garden wedding was incredible with chocolate brown, green, yellow and cream.  We love that the bride carried her colors into the place cards and favor boxes.  Check out the amazing favor boxes above which are so beautiful in green and chocolate brown with the brown ribbon and simple white embossed cards.

{Not every bride feels brave enough to use brown this way – but it is so incredible when done the right way like the bride did}. It makes for a great fall color palette.

The Venue:

We loved this venue because the private home had that perfect English garden feel. As you walk into the backyard, you are instantly transported to a different world which somehow manages to evoke the turn of the age.

The Decor:

The garden party theme was carried throughout the wedding.  Long rectangular tables were brought in.  The tables were then set with cream linens, clear and white plates. Each place setting was rounded off with the bride and groom’s amazing favor boxes in either brown or green.   The bride then integrated the garden {and mushroom} theme by introducing mushrooms unexpectedly on tables, around the garden and even on the cake!

Instead of using all traditional flowers, the bride used large vases of plants as well as potted herb plants and cookie jars filled with river rocks and herbs to complete this rustic chic look. The look is very evocative of French and Italian provincialweddings in which evenly smelling herbs and plants like lavender are used instead of traditional flowers.

To take the look from day to night, the trees were filled with hanging candle votives which dangled and gave the garden some twinkle.

Now this is a wedding we can all aspire to have!

Wedding Color Inspiration Board 1: Malibu Beach Chic

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

By: Candice Lapin

Want to throw a Beach Chic Wedding, but don’t know where to start with colors, let alone the finishing details? Well fear not! We spotted this amazing real wedding on the Next Exit blog (thank you to Cat and Adi Benner) and had to share this incredibly inspiring boda! For this wedding, it was all in the details, as the finishing touches on this wedding are what really make it standout.  Not to mention that the couple actually were able to bring in all the natural elements into their reception: water {the beach}, earth {the sand}, fire {the candles} and air {the beach breeze}.

Small Reception:

First, the wedding was incredibly intimate with a ceremony held on the beach and a small reception held at the Malibu Beach Inn.  For those looking to create a chic intimate beach party, this is the way to go.  At the same time what is so great about this reception is that these details could easily be translated into any size beach wedding reception.

Color Palette:

With a color palette of cream, caramel, green and violet blue, this wedding reception is absolutely elegant and so chic in it understated colors. It absolutely matches the beach scenery and let’s the surf and sand standout as a calm background to the event.

Decor:

We love the use of these extremely beautiful wood basket chairs. The chairs are such an incredible detail and make the table look thoughtful and beachside chic. Plus, the caramel of the chairs against the white linen really make the table decor pop {We love the color combination of caramel against the blue as well}.  And, the rectangular table is totally unexpected and keeps the dinner reception very intimate. The table was set with silver chargers. Atop the charges, they placed sand dollar place cards to keep the fete in theme.  The table was then completed with candles and delicate florals placed along the long table.

Dessert:

We just cannot say enough about the color combinations of these outstanding dainty french macarons, a Paratinovia favorite, in a palette of cream, light green and caramel.  Macarons are a french bite sized desert that has become a real trend in wedding desserts. The desserts also included cookies which is a simple touch of comfort that guests will really enjoy. A Special Thank you to Next Exit Photography for the wonderful access to these pictures.

Lunas de Miel: Locura Brasileña

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

¿A dónde?
